FSU Women’s Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women’s basketball team will battle the Lewis (Ill.) Flyers in a 4 p.m. (EST) non-league outing this Wednesday (Dec. 18) at LU’s Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. Ferris, which is presently 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action, is in the midst of a seven-game road stretch.
Ferris Splits Two Games - Ferris split two games at the Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) Classic held last weekend (Dec. 14-15) at SJC’s Richard F. Scharf Gymnasium in Rensselaer, Ind. FSU dropped a 68-62 non-league decision to the Wisconsin-Parkside Lady Rangers last Saturday (Dec. 14). The Bulldogs then posted a 97-85 non-conference win over the host Saint Joseph’s Pumas in last Sunday’s (Dec. 15) classic finale. Junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) scored a team-high 19 points against UWP and poured in a game-high 29 points along with seven assists versus SJC. Freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) added a personal career-high 25 points in the win over the Pumas. Junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) tallied 10 points against Wisconsin-Parkside and posted 13 points at Saint Joseph’s.
Last Season - Ferris State finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark, including a fourth-place 10-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament for the third consecutive season. Senior forward Patti Larson (Kalkaska) and sophomore forward Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central) are Ferris’ 2002-03 team captains.
The Bulldog Tradition - The Ferris State women’s basketball program has compiled a 328-367 (.472) all-time mark in its 28 previous campaigns. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has ranked among the nation’s top 25 academic teams four consecutive seasons.
Ferris Picked Fifth In Preseason Poll - Ferris State was picked to finish fifth in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs tallied 16 total points. The league's 13 head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their teams. The first-place team on each ballot received six points while the second received five points, etc.
Hitting The Road Again - Ferris State is 112-83 (.579) overall since 1995-96 and sports a 64-55 (.538) record in road/neutral site contests during that span. The Bulldogs are 32-20 (.615) overall in road games under head coach Tracey Fisk, including a 21-17 (.553) record in conference play.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Fifth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 75-42 (.641) at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
GLIAC Player Of The Week - Lucy DeMartin has been selected this week's GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for her performance last weekend. Ferris has claimed the award three consecutive weeks to date as DeMartin was honored two weeks ago (Dec. 2) and Bridget Horwitz garnered the accolades last week (Dec. 9). DeMartin led Ferris at the Saint Joseph's Classic with 48 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and nine steals in two contests. The 5-9 DeMartin averaged 24 points, six assists and five rebounds per game while hitting 18-of-29 (.612) shots from the floor and five-of-eight (.625) three-point field goal attempts. DeMartin, who has scored 10 points or more in 12 consecutive games dating back to last season, currently ranks as FSU’s leading scorer (22.6 ppg). She has led Ferris in scoring in five of the last six outings to date.
Streak Ends For Horwitz - Bridget Horwitz, a 2001-02 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick, had her five-game double-double (scoring and rebounding) streak end against Wisconsin-Parkside as she totaled 13 points and eight rebounds. The 6-2 Horwitz, who notched her 700th career point at Saint Joseph’s, currently has an active 15-game double-figure scoring streak dating back to last season. She is averaging a team-high 10.7 rebounds per game and ranks second among Ferris' scoring leaders at 16.3 points per game.
DeMartin Closing In - Lucy DeMartin presently has scored 787 career points and needs 21 more to move into a 16th-place tie with Carrie Roys (808; 1996-00) on FSU's career scoring leaders list. DeMartin, who is one rebound shy of attaining her 200th career board, presently has scored 20 points or more in six of her last seven outings and is averaging 23.5 points per game during that span. She ranks seventh (.359; 46-128) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is two three-point baskets shy of tying Lori Young (48; 1992-94) for 12th place on Ferris' all-time chart. DeMartin, who currently ranks third (.818; 189-231) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, recorded the program’s fifth-best single-season free throw percentage mark (.853; 93-109) and sixth-best made free throw total (93) in 2001-02.
Bulldog Bites - Erin Miller was six-of-seven (.857) from three-point range in FSU’s win over Saint Joseph’s. Her six treys was one short of tying the school record of seven set by Lori Young at Michigan Tech (12/12/92) ....... Ferris made 39-of-65 (.600) field goal attempts against the Pumas, which represents its best shooting percentage since recording a school record .674 (31-46) versus Aquinas (1/31/89). FSU’s 97-point output fell three shy of registering 100 points in a road game for the first time in school history ........... The Bulldogs’ top three season scoring leaders (Lucy DeMartin, Bridget Horwitz, & Miller) have accounted for 369 of the squad's 539 total points (69%) this season. No other Bulldog player has reached double-figure scoring this season ........... Sophomore forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) needs one point to garner her 50th career point .......... Sophomore guard Lindsey Kohn (Belding) has scored 76 career points to date and is 24 shy of attaining her 100th career point ........ Junior forward Stephanie Benear (Howell) needs 10 more rebounds to notch her 150th career board ....... Freshman forward Kelly McLaughlin (Clare) totaled a personal career-high seven points against Wisconsin-Parkside while freshman guard/forward Mary Brown (Benton Harbor/Lake Michigan Catholic) had a career-best five points versus Saint Joseph’s ......... Sophomore forward Molly Potvin matched a personal season-high with eight points against the Lady Rangers. The 5-10 Potvin also scored eight points in Ferris’ 72-57 win over Findlay (11/30).
Horwitz Closing In - Bridget Horwitz currently has 64 career blocked shots and needs six more to tie Heather Rosneck (70; 1995-99) for second place on Ferris' career blocks chart. She has 389 career rebounds to date and is 14 shy of tying Terri Fraser (403; 1978-82) for 18th place among the school’s career leaders. The 6-2 Horwitz posted the school’s third-best single-season scoring average (15.0 ppg) by a Bulldog sophomore during the 2001-02 campaign. She also placed fifth among the program’s sophomores in single-season rebounds (8.8 rpg) while compiling a team-best eight double-double (scoring & rebounding) performances. Horwitz, who currently ranks eighth (.475; 286-602) on FSU’s career field goal percentage chart, recorded her 13th career double-double performance at Mercyhurst (12/7). Horwitz has presently led Ferris in rebounding in all seven games this campaign.
Freshman Playing Well - Erin Miller presently ranks as FSU’s third-leading scorer (13.9) this campaign and has compiled four double-digit scoring performances to date. The 5-7 Miller currently is shooting 55-percent (12-22) from three-point range and has started all seven games this campaign.
Against The Opponent - Ferris State will face Lewis (Ill.) this Wednesday at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill.
Lewis: Ferris holds a 3-0 series edge entering this Wednesday’s meeting with Lewis and defeated the Flyers 84-60 in the last meeting (12/5/00) at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. LU, which is coached by acting first-year head coach Lynn Plett, is presently 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play after last Saturday’s (Dec. 14) 83-66 non-league win at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Flyers, who compiled a 7-19 overall record and a 10th-place 4-16 GLVC mark in 2001-02, have dropped two of their last three outings. Junior forward Bryanne Callahan presently ranks as Lewis’ leading scorer (14.7 ppg). The Bulldogs posted an 83-63 victory in the only previous series meeting (12/10/99) at Romeoville, Ill.
Looking Ahead - Ferris State will take part in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, Dec. 28-29, at Southern Indiana’s Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Ind. The Bulldogs will square off against the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars in non-conference action Saturday, Dec. 28, at 7 p.m. (EST). FSU will then face the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles Sunday, Dec. 29, in a 5 p.m. (EST) non-league encounter.
