The Ferris State University women’s basketball program has received a commitment from prep guard Katie Loosvelt (Trenton/Carlson), who has announced her intentions to attend and compete in basketball at FSU, starting with the 2004-05 academic term. The announcement was made by sixth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk.
The 5-3 Loosvelt averaged a school single-season record 20.4 points per game for Carlson High School as a senior during the 2003 campaign. The three-time (2001-03) All-Michigan Mega Conference Gold Division honoree led the Marauders to an 18-3 overall record and a conference title in 2003 under head coach Chris Boller.
“Katie’s a fiesty competitor who’s worked hard to achieve her goals,” said Fisk, who was named the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Coach of the Year. “She penetrates well with the basketball and is extremely quick. Her offensive ability fits our style of play, which will make her a nice addition.”
A three-year (2001-03) letterwinner, Loosvelt attained both Detroit Free Press and Detroit News Class B All-State accolades in her final campaign. Loosvelt, who garnered 2003 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) All-State Special Mention kudos, compiled both a school single-season record 133 assists and 147 steals as a senior. The three-time (2001-03) all-region pick presently ranks as CHS’ all-time leader in career assists (337), steals (424) and field goal percentage (.502). A 2003 All-Downriver Dream Team selection, Loosvelt also received all-metro west and team Most Valuable Player Award honors in 2003.
Loosvelt totaled 11 points, seven steals and five assists per outing as a junior (2002) after averaging seven points and four steals in her sophomore campaign (2001). She helped lead the Marauders to a district championship in 2001.
“Katie was well respected by the coaches throughout her league and area,” Fisk said. “She has a tremendous amount of potential and we hope her quickness will create match-up problems for our opponents.”
Besides basketball, Loosvelt also competed in volleyball, soccer along with track and field at Carlson. She served as senior class president, vice president of the National Honor Society and was named CHS’ 2003 homecoming queen. Loosvelt also was active in the student council and the Business Professionals of America chapter.
Loosvelt, who’s the daughter of Richard and Sandra Loosvelt, remains undecided on an academic major. She joins Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau), Samantha Johns (Allendale) and Lindsey Deyo (Battle Creek/Gull Lake) as FSU’s 2004-05 women’s basketball recruits to date.
The Bulldogs, who concluded the 2003-04 campaign with a 21-10 overall record, compiled a second-place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark and reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in school history. The 2003-04 campaign, which was the program’s 30th anniversary season, marks the eighth consecutive year the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games and their second 20-win campaign in the last five seasons.
