Ferris State University men’s basketball head coach Bill Sall, who guided the Bulldogs to the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division title in his second season at the helm, has announced the addition of prep guard Jesse York (Muskegon Heights). York plans to attend and play basketball at FSU beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.
The 6-1 York attained Detroit News and Associated Press Class B All-State First Team recognition along with second-team Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Class B laurels while leading Muskegon Heights High School to a 25-2 overall mark as a senior during the 2003-04 campaign. The 2003-04 Muskegon Chronicle All-Area Dream Team honoree tallied a team-best 16 points in the Tigers’ 59-55 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class B state semifinal loss to DeWitt (March 26) at Michigan State’s Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.
York previously helped the Tigers advance to the state quarterfinals by scoring 15 points in MHHS’ 75-54 triumph over East Grand Rapids in the MHSAA Region No. 15 final (March 20) held in FSU’s Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. He totaled a team-high 18 points as Muskegon Heights beat Fremont 87-47 in the regional semifinals (March 16) at Wink Arena.
“Jesse has a tremendous amount of athleticism and desire,” Sall said. “He also has an outstanding basketball background and brings a winning attitude, which is important for our continued success.”
York averaged 18.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.6 steals per game in his final campaign as Muskegon Heights captured both its third consecutive district and regional title under first-year head coach and former Ferris State men’s basketball player Keith Guy (1995-97). The Tigers compiled a 21-4 record under current Central Michigan University Assistant Coach Lamar Chapman in 2002-03 while earning MHSAA Class B State Runner-Up plaudits. York, who totaled 46 made three-pointers as a senior, received third-team Detroit Free Press Class B All-State kudos in his junior campaign and was selected to play in this summer’s annual Ta-Wa-Si high school benefit all-star boys basketball game. He plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State.
“Jesse’s greatest asset is his ability to compete,” said Sall. “We’re looking forward to having him in our program and expect him to develop throughout his career.”
York joins forward Willie Burrel (Muskegon Heights), who will be a senior in 2004-05, as current Bulldog players from the Tigers’ program. He is the latest addition to the Bulldogs’ 2004-05 recruiting class, which also includes prep guards Marcus Lancaster (Wyoming/Lee) and Tyler Wolfe (Cedar Springs) along with center Chad DeLong (Fremont). FSU also added Northern Michigan University transfer guard Antwuan Holt (Okemos).
Ferris State, which claimed the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Regular-Season Championship, finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-14 overall record and a 14-4 league mark. FSU, which has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member, posted its best overall record in 2003-04 since compiling a 21-12 ledger during the 1997-98 season.
