The Ferris State University men’s basketball program, which claimed the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division championship, has strengthened its West Michigan recruiting ties by inking local prep standout Tyler Wolfe (Cedar Springs) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play basketball at FSU starting with the 2004-05 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ second-year head coach Bill Sall.
A 6-3 guard, Wolfe averaged 25.4 points, seven assists and four rebounds per game while leading Cedar Springs High School to a 22-1 overall record and the program’s fifth district crown in the last six seasons during the 2003-04 campaign. He attained first-team 2003-04 Class B All-State recognition from the Associated Press, Detroit News and Michiganpreps.com along with Grand Rapids Press All-Area Dream Team accolades after leading CSHS to the school’s first-ever unbeaten regular season. The Red Hawks, who won their second-straight district title this year, fell to East Grand Rapids 57-56 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class B Region No. 15 Tournament semifinals (March 17) held at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Wolfe totaled a game-high 22 points in the season ending loss for Cedar Springs, which was Class B’s fourth-ranked squad entering the contest.
“Tyler’s had tremendous success and comes from a winning program,” Sall said. “He’s a pure shooter with deep range and it’s getting harder to find players with those abilities at the prep level. His work ethic and desire to improve also stand out, which will pay big dividends for him in the coming years.”
A three-time All-Ottawa Kent (OK) Gold and White Team honoree, Wolfe helped the Red Hawks win their first conference title (OK White) since 1977 this campaign under head coach Dave Schlump. He also became only the third player in school history to register 1,000 career points, joining Norm Hill (1965) and his cousin, former Lake Superior State University men’s basketball player Nick Wolfe (1994).
Wolfe, a three-year varsity starter, attained 2002-03 Detroit Free Press Class B Fifth Team All-State recognition as a result of leading CSHS to an 18-7 overall mark and a regional finals appearance as a junior (2002-03). He joins former prep teammate Adam Veltkamp (Cedar Springs), who redshirted during his initial season at FSU in 2003-04, as current Bulldog players from the Red Hawks’ program.
“It’s always nice to find local talent, which will help us continue to gain community support for our program,” said Sall. “Tyler’s an outstanding student-athlete and we’re looking forward to the fan support he’ll receive here at Ferris.”
The son of John and Cindy Wolfe, Tyler plans to major in education at Ferris State. He represents the Bulldogs’ initial recruiting class member of the 2003-04 signing period.
Ferris State finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-14 overall record, including a 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark. FSU, which has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member, posted its best overall record in 2003-04 since compiling a 21-12 ledger during the 1997-98 season.
