FSU SIGNS DETROIT MURRAY-WRIGHT’S MICHAEL DANIELS

Honorable Mention All-State Player Commits To Bulldog Men’s Basketball Program

The Ferris State University men’s basketball program has signed forward Michael Daniels (Detroit/Murray-Wright) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play men’s basketball at FSU, starting in the 2003-04 academic year. The announcement was made by first-year FSU head coach Bill Sall.

The 6-6 Daniels tallied 15.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while leading Detroit Murray-Wright High School to a 19-3 overall record and a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A State Semifinal appearance as a senior during the 2002-03 campaign. The honorable mention 2002-03 Detroit Free Press and Detroit News Class A All-State selection scored a team-high 22 points and had four steals in the Pilots’ 62-61 loss versus eventual state champion Rockford in the state semifinals (March 21) at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

“Michael comes from a winning tradition and has a good feel for the game of basketball,” Sall said. “He’ll have to adjust to a few things at the collegiate level, but we’re expecting him to be a solid contributor right away.

“He knows where he needs to be on the floor and will be a strong player in our league,” added Sall.

A third-team 2002-03 Detroit Public School League (PSL) pick, Daniels received both honorable mention All-Metro accolades and third-team All-Detroit honors from the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News. The two-year letterwinner guided Detroit Murray-Wright to a first-place 11-1 mark in the PSL’s Southeast Division this campaign under head coach Earl Moore. Daniels also served as team captain for the Pilots, who reached the state semifinals for the third time in school history. He was an 11th-team 2002-03 Class A all-state honoree by MichiganPreps.com.

“He has the ability to shoot the ball from mid-range,” said Sall. “In addition, Michael has the potential to be an excellent player with his back to the basket, which will help add versatility to our team.”

The son of Brenda Daniels, Michael plans to major in education at Ferris State. He joins forward/center Adam Veltkamp (Cedar Springs), guard C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa) and forward Terrance Shaw (Saginaw/Bridgeport) as FSU’s 2003-04 men’s basketball recruits to date.

Ferris’ 11-15 overall record this campaign was its best since compiling a 21-12 mark during the 1997-98 season. FSU also posted a fourth-place 7-11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish this season after being picked seventh in the 2002-03 GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
