Top Five Tips to Winterize Your Car

Michael Hachman, Automotive Service Technology professor in the College of Technology, offers these valuable tips to ensuring a smooth, safe ride all winter long. winterize your car
  1. Make sure that vehicle antifreeze protection is well below the lowest anticipated temperature - this usually means about a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Manufacturers also recommend that coolant be flushed and refilled periodically. Check fluid level often throughout the year and follow manufacturer's procedures in your owner's manual when checking the level.

  2. Winter visibility is very important. Check wiper blades and replace if necessary. Also, check windshield washer system for proper fluid level and operation. Don't forget the rear window if your vehicle has rear wipers/washers.

  3. Tires are one of the more important items for driving on winter roads. Worn tires are not effective on snow. Replace tires as necessary and check tire pressure at least once a month. Don't forget the spare!

  4. Engine performance issues can result in a no start condition or a breakdown on the road. Periodic tune-ups, battery service, air filter replacement, hose and belt inspections, oil changes and level checks for all fluids are essential to trouble free driving.

  5. Winter safety kits carried in the vehicle are a good idea. Gloves, boots, blankets, a small shovel, water, food, flashlight, sand or kitty litter and a cell phone are all good things to carry in case of an emergency.
Remember, the owner's manual for your vehicle will include many safety recommendations as well as recommendations for periodic maintenance. Read your manual and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your vehicle. There are also many Web sites dedicated to vehicle safety, winter driving and vehicle maintenance.
