A Message from the Dean of Student Life

Leroy Wright Dear Ferris State University Students:

On behalf of the Office of the Dean of Student Life, I welcome new and returning students to a new academic year. Many of you have already noticed many new faces, newly named offices, revitalized buildings, and enhanced student services. As a member of the Ferris State University and Big Rapids communities you are embarking on an exhilarating academic year. As college students many of you will or have figured out that there are a lot of challenges when it comes to putting the pieces together during your college experience. I would encourage all of you to remember that as young adults your pathway to success is always under construction.

Dean Wright's Fall 2007 Construction Tips:
  • Take ownership in your home away from home
  • Prioritize your semester
  • Develop good study habits that work best for you
  • Meet new people, network, and be kind to others
  • Practice personal safety by locking your doors, walking with friends, and staying informed
  • Think about ways to connect your in-class learning with out-of-class experiences
  • Remember to stop and think about all consequences before you decide to act
  • Respect yourself by developing a healthy attitude about lifestyle choices
  • Embrace the opportunities to make a difference in our communities
  • Make the Ferris experience a contagious experience
I look forward to watching you develop as you fulfill your academic obligations and become torch bearers of the future. Please call upon faculty, staff, and your fellow students to assist you in realizing your leadership potential. We are happy to help you make connections across campus and in the Big Rapids community. Please visit the various offices and support services available to you while you are in school.

During my undergraduate years at Ferris, I sought out my academic advisor to take the right classes, I relied on my college's educational counselor to assist me in making sound academic decisions, I took a walk to the Counseling Center when I was struggling emotionally, I supported athletic events as a bulldog, and I was proud to wear Ferris State University on my clothing. Be involved at Ferris not only to grow as a student leader but to make our campus safe, welcoming, and filled with school spirit.

Feel free to contact me at 231-591-3619 or send me an email at wrightl@ferris.edu, if you have a question, concern, or a suggestion. I'm here to help you!

Go Bulldogs!
