Meyer Makes Summer a Championship Season
Meyer won the Minnesota Women’s State Amateur golf title at Edina Country Club near Minneapolis, finishing four shots ahead of former champion Claudia Pilot and Olivia Lansing, Minnesota’s top-ranked player. She started the tournament with a round of 81, then caught fire with consecutive rounds of one-under-par 72 to close out the 54-hole event.
“Winning a tournament like this has given me a ton of confidence. I’d love to be on the LPGA Tour some day; it’s been my dream for years and years,” Meyer told the Duluth News Tribune after her victory. Meyer started the final day three strokes back, but put together her winning score by concentrating on her game rather than the scoreboard, which resulted in her missing only two fairways on her final round and sinking crucial putts.
Not bad for someone who says the most difficult aspect of playing golf is “finding and keeping my focus.”
A Duluth, Minn., native, Meyer earned all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team honors the last two seasons. She was the individual medalist at the 2006-07 GLIAC championships, the same year she received the team’s Bulldog Award in recognition of her dedication and hard work. This past spring she finished in seventh place individually at the NCAA Division-II National Championship, leading the scoring for the Bulldogs who finished fourth nationally.
Meyer will be able to pursue her dreams of playing on the LPGA Tour after she graduates next May. 18 August 2008
