by Judith V. Boettcher, Corporation for Research and Education Networking (CREN), Syllabus, Volume 13, Number 7, March 2000

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has provided "a valuable data-based snapshot of distance education based on data collected for the calendar year 1997-1998." The full report can be accessed at http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2000013.

The authors summarize in this article the answers to the following six questions:

  1. Which institutions are offering distance education courses and what are the enrollments in these courses?
  2. How many courses—as distinct from degree programs and certificates—are being offered, and in what fields?
  3. How many and what degrees and certificate programs are being offered by which types of institutions?
  4. What types of distance education technologies are being used in distance education course delivery?
  5. What are the policies for charging tuition and fees to students enrolled in distance education courses?
  6. What changes have occurred since the previous report on distance education in 1994-95?
