What in the World is Library Instruction?
The instruction team at Timme Library offers a variety of in-depth sessions on how to effectively use library resources. These sessions include tours, orientation workshops, and class-specific instruction. Students receive hands-on interactive training in a well equipped studio located on the first floor of Timme Library. In these sessions, students learn how to find books and articles using the Library Catalog, electronic databases and the World Wide Web. Students also learn proper research techniques and how to evaluate a variety of sources. The goal is not only to give students the skills they need to complete a research paper or other class assignment, but to teach them valuable research skills that will aid them in their academic and professional lives. Students receive instruction throughout college and progressively build these research skills.
The instruction team at the Library also offers orientation programs and workshops for faculty and staff. In collaboration with subject-specialist librarians, the instruction librarians offer workshops on how to use different databases, the World Wide Web and search engines for research. Watch for announcements regarding these programs. As technology continues to change scholarly communication and research, it is important that faculty and staff keep current with these new technologies and search strategies.
For Fall 2000, the instruction team will be offering many services via the Web. Faculty and staff will be able to schedule instruction sessions through an online form and will be able to access handouts used in instruction sessions. News on workshops and sessions for faculty and staff will be posted on the Web site. An online tutorial will be available through WebCT that will teach important research skills such as citing sources, finding information, and evaluating resources.
With technology continuing to advance at a fast pace, the location, retrieval, and evaluation of information will also continue to change. In order to do well in the changing information environment, the FSU community needs to be proficient using this new technology and have a solid understanding of the research process. The instruction team continues to strive towards this goal and encourages all faculty, staff, and students to obtain essential skills by using the instruction services available at Timme Library. As the building of the new library progresses, it is more important than ever for everyone to possess the ability to navigate the vast array of information resources.
