What is a Library Liaison?
A library liaison is a faculty librarian who has been formally designated as the primary contact person between the Library and an academic unit of the University. The intention of such appointments is to provide faculty and students with a personal contact to whom library-related issues and questions may be addressed. The Library Liaison is knowledgeable about the Library's collections, services, policies, and resources. The liaison is also expected to be well-informed regarding program curricula and relevant information resources in their assigned area(s).
Regular communication between the liaison and his or her academic programs is the foundation for all liaison activities. Communication may be through an official departmental contact person (e.g. the department head or program coordinator), via a departmental Library committee, by visits to individual faculty members, through print or electronic communications, by periodic or regular attendance at faculty meetings, or by participation in academic colloquia or similar events. Regular communication helps liaisons budget their time, pick appropriate activities and services to offer departments, and gain an overall understanding of campus needs.
Additionally, feedback obtained through different liaison activities may serve as a barometer of the needs of the overall campus and focus planning, marketing, and strategic directions for the Library.
