Databases

The following annotations describe the philosophy and religion-related databases to which FLITE subscribes. The use of these databases is restricted to Ferris-affiliated faculty, students, and staff. Those affiliated with Ferris, please click here for directions for off-campus use.

Dissertation Abstracts
Dissertation Abstracts contains citations for over 1.5 million theses and dissertations completed in North America and Europe since 1861. Abstracts for dissertations are available from 1980 and for theses from 1988.

Humanities Abstracts
Philosophy and religion are among the topics in the Humanities covered in this database. Mostly indexing journal articles, citations extend back to 1984.

Directories

Academic Jewish Studies Internet Directory
This site contains academic associations and research institutes devoted to Judaism. Jewish studies, Hebraica, and library online catalogs pertinent to all facets of Judaica may be searched via various links. The RAMBI Index of Articles in Jewish Studies, as well as several other databases, are included. An advanced search option allows the user to search by exact phrase, multiple words, similar words, or wildcards. The site is updated twice per month.

The Buddhist Directory
Several Buddhist links, ranging in scope from Buddhist studies and texts (including Theravada and information regarding the Vajrayana and Tibetan schools of Buddhism) to the Dhammapada, are included at this site. Each of the primary links are annotated. A comprehensive collection of links related to the Dharma, as well as sites providing virtual libraries dedicated to Buddhism, are furnished.

Philosophy Dictionary
This site contains several links that include Web pages devoted to the philosophy of mind, Islamic philosophical terms, dictionaries of consciousness, lexicons for individual philosophers (Kant, Leibniz, Spinoza, et al.), various encyclopedias of philosophy, and resources on philosophy and logic.  Some of the links are in German, and a search box (Search for a Glossary or Subject Dictionary) is provided for users in the event that none of the links prove fruitful.  There is also an "Add URL" feature which allows users to suggest other sites that they believe ought to be added to the principal site.

Finding God in Cyberspace: A Guide to Religious Studies Resources on the Internet
Virtually all of the world's major religions are covered at this site. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism are well-represented, as are their various related denominations. Each of the headings for the major religions are annotated, and links to several other related sites are provided. Virtual libraries, including the Facets of Religion site (which in addition to world religions and denominations, contains information on ancient religions, atheism, pantheism, gnosticism, and magical religions) are also furnished.

Internet Researcher: A Guide to Religious Studies and Philosophy Resources
Emanating from the Catholic University of America libraries, this site was developed to aid in locating Internet resources in philosophy and religious studies. Annotated Web sites pertaining to theology, canon law, church history, Biblical studies, religion and religious education, and philosophy are provided. ARGOS, the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, NOESIS (Philosophical Research Online), and a virtual library devoted to philosophy (including electronic texts which are searchable by author, title, and translator) are among the resources included.

Apologetics Index
An exhaustive resource on apologetics research and world religions, this site includes numerous resources on religions, cults, sects, movements, and doctrines. Listings are organized (and may be searched) alphabetically. Relevant news headlines from around the world are furnished daily. The site includes a combination search box at the bottom right of the screen. Users enter the search term, and combine this with various formats (e.g., book, video, music recording) to obtain desired combinatorial results.

Internet Sacred Text Archive
Focusing primarily on sacred writings, the "Internet Sacred Text Archive" includes bibliographical and historical information on some of the world's most celebrated religious creeds, texts, and traditions. The alphabetical list of topics is broad in scope, and covers a number of Eastern and Western religions and related subjects. The standard number of seven world religions has been augmented to fourteen; among these are Baha'i, Jainism, Paganism, Shinto, and Zoroastrianism.

The Hindu Universe
An exhaustive resource devoted to Hinduism, this site includes categories such as the history of Hinduism, Dharma and philosophy, God sages and gurus, Jain Dharma, books on Hinduism, social and contemporary Hindic issues, information on temples and organizations, and customs and methods of worship. Introductions to each of these topics are provided, as are a plethora of additional links. The latest world news related to Hinduism is furnished, and Keyword searching and a Glossary are provided.

HUMBUL Humanities Hub
HUMBUL is a first-rate resource devoted to the study of the humanities. Several links to various subjects are provided, including archaeology, history, religion and theology, American studies, English, German, Spanish, Russian, Slavonic, French, Italian, and Celtic language and literature, classics, philosophy, linguistics, humanities computing, and comparative literature. The site includes a review of articles and a "Quicklinks to Resources for Humanities Research" searchable pulldown bar.

Religious Movements & Alternative Spirituality
This site contains information on virtually every religious sect, past and present. The scope entails a diverse collection of spiritual and social world views. Keyword searching, subject indexes, meta-indexes, and general directories are provided.

Voice of the Shuttle
Covering virtually all aspects of humanities and humanities-related arenas of thought, this web resource provides users with a plethora of scholarly and informational links. Anthropology, art, history, literature, music, philosophy, religion, politics, science, and women’s studies barely scratch the surface of this extensive site. Useful features include a "New Links Suggested by Users" area and form, whereby users may suggest sites for possible inclusion.
