Dissertation Abstracts     [Ferris Only]
Dissertation Abstracts contains citations for over 1.5 million theses and dissertations completed in North America and Europe since 1861. Abstracts for dissertations are available from 1980 and for theses from 1988.

Humanities Abstracts     [Ferris Only]
Music is among the topics in the Humanities covered in this database. Mostly indexing journal articles, citations extend back to 1984.

Medieval Music Database
The Scribe Database emanates from La Trobe University, and includes a systematic collection of scores, colour images, texts and bibliographic information pertinent to medieval music. Colour facsimiles of original manuscripts are provided. Composers flourishing from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries are represented, and alphabetized lists (consisting of anonymous works, composers, a substantial corpus of liturgical chant and manuscripts) are provided via additional links.

Renaissance Liturgical Imprints: A Census (RELICS)
This database contains information regarding worship books printed prior to 1601. RELICS includes information on over 13,500 titles. The information for each title is accurate, having been gleaned from personal inspections of monographs contained in most of the major research libraries of the United States. A few selected items contained in European libraries are included as well.

Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum
The Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum (TML) is a database devoted to the entire corpus of Latin music theory written during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Searchable links are categorized by date, e.g., fourth-fifth centuries, sixth-eighth centuries, ninth-eleventh centuries, etc. Once a link has been searched, texts for the respective treatises may be accessed.

Associations and Societies

American Brahms Society
This resource examines and disseminates research pertaining to the life and music of Johannes Brahms. The site maintains a Brahms archive and a research center, the latter devoted to a listing of current research topics relevant to Brahms. Information on related links (including the Johannes Brahms WebSource) is provided.

American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies (ASECS)
An interdisciplinary group which is “… dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in all aspects of the period,” the ASECS site includes membership information and information on meetings, conferences, and seminars, as well as online book reviews and a list of publications. Affiliate societies, a graduate student caucus, and a women’s caucus are featured.

The Arnold Schoenberg Center
The Arnold Schoenberg Center, provided in either German or English, includes an exhaustive amount of material on the seminal Viennese composer. Biographical and genealogical information, essays, paintings and photographs, information on the works (including a thematic and a chronological catalogue), a discography, bibliographical material, manuscripts, and personal writings are furnished. Exhibitions, archival and library holdings, historical clippings, research and publications, video and voice recordings, and music and recordings (the latter including music publisher's numbers) are also provided.

International Machaut Society
This site “…provides links to sites relevant to the teaching, study, and performance of poetic and musical works by Guillaume de Machaut.” It includes scholarly essays, biographical material, and reference sources, and furnishes complete texts (with a few in translation) for his entire literary and musical ouevre. Sound clips, discographies, and reviews have also been furnished.

Journal of the American Musicological Society
Scholarly inquiry into all aspects of musicology is provided. Among the topics covered are historical musicology, critical theory, music analysis, iconography and organology, performance practice, aesthetics and hermeneutics, ethnomusicology, gender and sexuality, popular music and cultural studies. The scope, breadth, and rigorous referee process have helped make this the premier journal in the field.

Mozart Society of America
This page is dedicated to “… the advancement of research about the life, works, historical context, and reception of Wolfgang Amadè Mozart.” Membership and meeting information, music events related to Mozart, and the performance practice and study of related music, is furnished on the site. Information regarding additional North American Mozart societies is provided as well.

Music Library Association
The premier professional organization for music libraries in the United States. This site includes information on administrative officers, awards and grants, committees, roundtables and interest groups, and publications. Links to the association’s newsletter (published quarterly), copyright guidelines, and placement service, are provided.

Royal Musical Association
Founded in 1874, the Royal Musical Association is one of the world's premiere musicological associations. Including among its members some of the most distinguished musicologists, composers, performers, and music theorists, the purpose of the RMA is to discuss and explore subjects pertaining to the art, science, and history of music. The RMA publishes annual proceedings, the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, specialized monographic series, the Research Chronicle, and a newsletter; additionally, the Association includes an archive of abstracts and reports on past conferences, a register of research students' dissertation topics, and information on becoming a member.

Society for Music Theory Home Page
Scholarly inquiry into all aspects of music theory is provided. Music analysis, musicology, music composition, performance practice, computer-based analysis, cultural theory, film music, gender theory, ethnomusicology, music perception and cognition, music technology, music theory pedagogy, non-Western music, and popular music are just some of the topics covered.

Society for Seventeenth Century Music
The Society for Seventeenth Century Music is dedicated to the study and performance of seventeenth century music and related arts. The site includes a list of publications, related online resources, and links to doctoral dissertations relevant to the period.

Bibliographies

Indian Music Bibliography
The Indian Music Bibliography contains useful information on articles, books, music instruction, musical works, and videorecordings pertaining to India. A glossary of terms specific to several genres of Indian music is included, as is information on purchasing various instruments (including descriptions and illustrations), concerts, and new and archived recordings. Segments on ragas, Indian notation, and exotic scales are included, as is information on composers, educators, instructors, and performers in the Indian and related traditions.

J. S. Bach Archive and Bibliography
The Bach bibliography contains over 1,000 entries, ranging in scope from editions and primary sources to biographical and historical resources. Thematic indexes, critical commentaries, and analyses of individual works are provided.

Tuning & Temperament Bibliography
One of the most extensive bibliographies on tuning and temperament is included at this site. Links (included within the text for the individualized entries) are furnished for related topics, and entries are alphabetized by author and (when lacking) title. A “quick jump” grid is provided at the head of the page for ease of navigation. Publishers, additional links, and relevant periodicals are also included.

Clara Wieck Schumann
Bibliographical and biographical resources on the premier female musician of the nineteenth century. Includes a list of compositions, a lengthy discography, and numerous links to sites detailing the accomplishments and influence of Clara Schumann. Chronologies, translations of her lieder, reviews, critical commentaries, and additional research tools are furnished.

Gilbert and Sullivan Archive Home Page
Billing itself as "The Premier Internet Light Opera Site," this source includes information on the fourteen Gilbert and Sullivan operas. There is also information on the remaining stage works, and extensive biographical material on both men. Text and zip files for the complete libretti are included, and bibliographic sources (books, articles, and newsletters) are provided.

Guillaume de Machaut
An excellent resource devoted to one of the most significant composers of the middle ages. Contains bibliographical and biographical information, as well as a discography. Information on monographs and scores related to Machaut is provided, as are essays on the French Ars Nova.

Guillaume Dufay
Biographical information on one of the seminal musical figures of the early renaissance. The site contains a partial (and impressive) discography at present; the hope is that it will become exhaustive in the future. The individual entries for recordings include additional links.

Hildegard von Bingen
Internet resources, bibliographical and biographical information, an exhaustive discography, texts to all of the known works, and scholarly editions of Hildegard are furnished at this site. Concordances and correspondences are included, as are monographs on her musical style and contributions to cosmology.

Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies
Established in 1983, the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies is an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to pursue scholarly Beethoven studies in North America.  Manuscripts, documents, and first editions, as well as sketches, autographs, and ephemera, are among the materials collated and organized at this site.  One of the Center's greatest strengths is the Beethoven Bibliography Database, which includes monographs, articles from scholarly music and non-music journals, dissertations and theses, book reviews, recordings and scores, essays, and encyclopedia articles, as well as guides to Beethoven research such as thematic catalogs, biographies, and a works list.

Johannes Ockeghem Home Page
The Johannes Ockeghem Home Page is devoted to one of the most enigmatic and innovative composers of the fifteenth century. The site includes bibliographical, biographical, and iconographical resources, as well as abstracts, editions, facsimiles, reviews, and information on theorists and theoretical treatises pertinent to the works. Links to exhaustive discographies are furnished, as is information on Library of Congress format and name citations, manuscripts and transcriptions, and unpublished studies and unreleased recordings; additionally, a basic repertoire list, Midi files for a number of the works, and OCLC and WorldCat entries are provided.

Josquin des Prez
An introduction to the biography, life, and music of one of the most influential composers in music history. Essays on selected individual works are provided, and information regarding monographs, recordings, and scores is furnished as well. Additional links are provided.

William Byrd
A complete list of works written by the greatest composer of the English renaissance is included at this site. An important feature is a link which includes virtually all of the keyboard music with accompanying MIDI files. Notes on the tuning system employed (quarter-comma meantone) are given, as are additional links to articles written by various scholars. An essay on the vocal music of Byrd is also provided.

College Music School Address Book
Over nine-hundred college music programs in the United States are listed here. Entries are grouped by state, and subsequent entries are listed alphabetically. Individual links for colleges and universities are provided.

Dictionary of American Hymnology
The Dictionary of American Hymnology Project (DAH) provides data related to hymns and hymnwriters as well as the history of congregational song in America. The site includes a bibliography of over 5,000 hymnals published in America. Includes an index of first lines of hymns composed between 1640 to 1978, with a supplementary index entailing 1978 to present.

All Music Guide
The All Music Guide is one of the most comprehensive resources of its kind. Virtually all types of music may be found here--rock, country, jazz, classical, blues, world music, folk, bluegrass, rap, reggae, vocal, gospel, easy listening, and new age, among others. AMG offers "... reviews, biographies, ratings, images, titles, credits, and thousands of descriptive categories." One of the more useful features is the search bar, which allows the user to search by artist, album, song, style, or recording label.

All About Jazz: The Web's Ultimate Guide to Jazz
Billing itself as the "Web's ultimate guide to jazz," this resource includes reviews, interviews, columns, and profiles of jazz musicians and groups worldwide. Directories of clubs, jazz vocalists and instrumentalists, and record labels, as well as a calendar (listing current concerts and festivals) are provided, and convenient roll overs provide the user with a number of jazz-related resources. Additional links include the latest news, a Forum for discussion, new releases and showcase titles, completing this eclectic site devoted to jazz musicians and several styles of jazz music.

The Carolina Classical Connection
The Carolina Classical Connection is a classical music index which contains hundreds of links on the music pertaining to several historical periods. Among these are the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century historical periods; additionally, piano and opera links are furnished. A navigation bar and a keyword search box, located at the bottom of the page, are included for ease of use.

Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology - Online
This site includes an index to dissertations in progress and a bibliography of completed dissertations reported since mid-1995. Links are arranged under broad topical categories. There is also an author index as well as information on the sponsoring site, the American Musicological Society.

DW3 Classical Music Resources
This resource emanating from Duke University is well-organized and eclectic. Billing itself as the "World's most comprehensive collection of classical music links," DW3 (Duke World Wide Web) contains approximately 1,500 web sites in over twelve languages. The site contains accurate and scholarly biographical and historical data on all musicological periods. Periods covered are medieval/renaissance, baroque, classic, romantic, early twentieth century, and late twentieth century. There is also a link for women composers.

Glenn Gould Archive
A resource devoted to one of the premier pianists of the twentieth century. Developed by the National Library of Canada, this site is the official repository of all archival materials pertaining to Glenn Gould. Chronologies, bibliographies, audio archival tapes, and writings (written by and about Gould) are provided. The archive includes searchable databases of the National Library’s Glenn Gould Papers. French and English versions of the site are furnished.

Gregorian Chant Home Page
Anything and everything you ever wanted to know about chant is listed here, including where to hear it, how to perform it, and how it was transcribed. Numerous links furnish access to related aspects of virtually all types of chant. Several medieval music theory sites are furnished, and additional links related to chant (libraries and microfilm collections, grants and funding sources, and electronic mail sites) are provided.

Historic American Sheet Music
This site offers a significant collection of digitized nineteenth and early twentieth century American sheet music. Over 3,000 images are available. Works were published in the United States between 1850 and 1920. Searchable topics include subject content, illustration type, advertisements included in the sheet music, and date.

Jacqueline du Pré
A resource devoted to perhaps the premier cellist of the twentieth century. This site provides biographical information, discographies, books and films, memorabilia, and several additional links. Particularly useful is the virtually exhaustive discography of Ms. Du Pré's often times flawless work; the catalog includes complete contents, label, and music publisher numbers for each of the recordings, as well as reviews of selected performances.

Knitting Factory
This excellent jazz resource is described as "… the most comprehensive jazz music destination in cyberspace connecting jazz communities and jazz enthusiasts throughout the world.” Jazze.com contains biographical information on jazz artists, discographies, photo galleries, and video clips. Additionally, the site includes a global jazz calendar which lists current jazz festivals of interest, and an easy-to-use artist search bar. The site provides an email list, a feedback forum, and instructions on how to download RealPlayer 8 Plus.

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies
Archaeology, art, cartography, codicology, music, paleography, philosophy, and theology are just some of the subjects provided at this site devoted to medieval studies. A plethora of monographs, articles, journals, reviews, bibliographies, and information on professional organizations and scholarly publications are featured. Special topics include Arthurian studies, the Crusades (including maps), heraldry, medieval women, and the Vikings.

Monumenta Musicae Byzantinae
Part of the Institute for Greek and Latin at the University of Copenhagen, this site is devoted primarily to Byzantine chant. A significant collection of microfilms and photographs (searchable by library, signature, folia, text, provenance, and date) is available for researchers. Particularly useful is the inclusion of variorums.

Rebecca St. James
The official Web site for one of the premiere Christian musical artists of the last decade. Biographical information, current news, media (photo gallery, albums, videos, downloads), merchandise, communication (Chat and Email), concert and international information, and an archives section are furnished. One of the strengths of the site is that it provides audio recordings of virtually every track (albums and singles) performed by Miss St. James ca. 1991-, including rare remixes, recordings from radio specials, and difficult to find and out-of-print material.

Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM)
One of the premiere international inventories of musical sources, this site includes graphical images of music incipits, a libretto database, a directory of over 5,500 libraries, and a significant amount of bibliographic citations. The citations database includes a substantial number of thematic catalogues and secondary sources.

Voice of the Shuttle
Covering virtually all aspects of humanities and humanities-related arenas of thought, this web resource provides users with a plethora of scholarly and informational links. Anthropology, art, history, literature, music, philosophy, religion, politics, science, and women’s studies barely scratch the surface of this extensive site. Useful features include a "New Links Suggested by Users" area and form, whereby users may suggest sites for possible inclusion.

Worldwide Internet Music Resources
Emanating from the Indiana School of Music library, this web resource includes roughly twenty-five links to music. Jazz, pop music, classical, and sound tracks are just some of the genres covered. The site includes links to CD hot lists, CD reviews, and Gramofile—a database containing over 24,000 classical music reviews.
