Gale Literary Index
This site is a searchable index, by author or by title, to the many literature-related sources published by Gale Group. The following Gale Group literature criticism series are available at FLITE: Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Dictionary of Literary Biography, Literature Criticism From 1400 - 1800, Nineteenth Century Literature Criticism, Poetry Criticism, Short Story Criticism, and Twentieth Century Literary Criticism. Other single-volume reference books indexed by this site may also be available at FLITE, check the online catalog using a title search. Also try the Literature Resource Center database which electronically reproduces much but not all of the content found in Gale's literary reference series.

LibrarySpot: Literary Criticism
Hosted by the Northwestern University Evanston Research Park, LibrarySpot is an award-winning Internet portal containing hundreds of links to educational Web sites. The Literary Criticism page features links to several sites which contain extensive links to full-text literary criticism and biographical material available on the Web, including the Internet Public Library and Voice of the Shuttle.

Online Etymology Dictionary This site lists the origin and first written usage for thousands of words in the English language. One may either browse alphabetical sections of words or search for a specific word.

Associations

Modern Language Association
Active for almost 120 years, the Modern Language Association or MLA has sought to "strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature." To this end, MLA publishes the MLA International Bibliography, four major periodicals, and the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. The MLA Web site features a number of reports and guidelines, prepared by MLA committees, available from the "Reports & Documents" link on the homepage.

National Council of Teachers of English
An organization dedicated to providing professional development opportunities for teachers of English at all levels of education, the NCTE, on its Web site, offers several useful resources, including conference and committee information, job postings, and an online bookstore.

Databases

The following annotations describe the databases relevant to the study and teaching of English to which FLITE subscribes. The use of these databases is restricted to Ferris-affiliated faculty, students, and staff. Those affiliated with Ferris, please click here for directions for off-campus use.

American Periodicals Series: 1740-1900     [Ferris Only]
This database offers digitized pages from over 1,100 periodical titles, including literary journals, published in the United States. A work-in-progress, American Periodical Series currently includes material through the early twentieth century.

ERIC     [Ferris Only]
ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) contains almost 1 million citations, from 1966 to the present, to journal articles and other material relating to all aspects of education, including the teaching of English. Materials cited in ERIC with an accession number which begins with ED (ERIC Document) are available on microfiche in FLITE.

JSTOR     [Ferris Only]
JSTOR is a multidisciplinary database which contains the full-text of articles from core journals in 26 academic disciplines. Coverage is from each journal's first issue and continues through 2-5 years from the most recently published issues. Forty-Eight Language and Literature journals are included in JSTOR.

Literature Resource Center     [Ferris Only]
This wide-ranging product from Gale Group includes much of the content found in Gale's various print reference series. Also included are full-text articles from over 250 literary journals as well as the ability to search the MLA Bibliography.

MLA International Bibliography     [Ferris Only]
The MLA (Modern Language Association) database is the main source for citations relating to literature, linguistics, and folklore. MLA includes over 1.3 million citations to articles, books, book chapters, dissertations, and bibliographies extending back to 1963.

Project Muse     [Ferris Only]
A partnership of several non-profit publishers, Project Muse offers full-text articles from over 250 journals. Full-text coverage for each journal varies but usually starts in the mid- to late- 1990s. Journals in Muse encompass the social sciences, humanities, and the arts; specific fields covered by Muse include political science, economics, education, literature, history, and the performing arts.

Encyclopedias

International Encyclopedia of Linguistics     [Ferris Only]
The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics provides 850 entries related to the study, use, application, and interrelations of linguistics around the world. Entries include histories, explanations, biographies, as well as individual language entries.

Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature     [Ferris Only]
The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature provides 350 entries on America’s literary makeup. This resource includes individuals such as Edgar Allen Poe, Sylvia Plath, and Maya Angelou; literary elements such as the Fireside Poets, Transcendentalism, and the Beat Movement; and major works such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, Gone With the Wind, and The Age of Innocence.

Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature     [Ferris Only]
The Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature covers historical to present day authors of Britain, including the Republic of Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. With 500 entries, individuals such as Daniel Defoe, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling are included as well as aspects such as the Novel, Mystery Plays, and Romanticism.

Oxford English Dictionary     [Ferris Only]
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) correctly boasts that it "is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium." Using more than 2.5 millions quotations, the OED documents usage for words from across the English-speaking world. The online OED contains the complete text of the 20-volume 2nd edition as well as the three-volume Additions Series and the content of quarterly updates which have added thousands of revisions and new words not found in the original print version.

Children's Literature

Children's Picture Book Database
Created and maintained by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the Children's Picture Book Database provides abstracts of over 5000 titles. Searchable by topics, concepts, and skills as well as by title, author, and publisher, the database is designed to aid teachers and librarians in finding materials with storylines adaptable to a specific curriculum or program.

Fairrosa Cyber Library of Children's Literature
Created and maintained by Roxanne Hsu Feldman, a Middle School Librarian at the Dalton School in New York City, The Fairrosa Cyber Library contains full-text for several classic children's books and fairy tales as well as archived discussion lists on various topics relating to children's literature.

International Children's Digital Library
A joint project of the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab and The Internet Archives, the International Children's Digital Library includes the full-text of over 200 children's books from 27 cultures in 15 languages. Launched in November 2002, the site anticipates eventually hosting over 10,000 titles from over 100 countries. Titles are browsable by category or by geographical region. It is necessary to download a free version of Java Virtual Machine in order to access materials on the site.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature     [Ferris Only]
The Oxford Encyclopedia of Children’s Literature provides 3,214 entries regarding authors, illustrators, and genres from around the world. Authors include Maurice Sendak, The Grimm Brothers, and Aesob. Genres such as adventure books, sea stories, and colonial fiction are included.

Full-Text Works

Bartleby.com
Bartleby.com offers free-of-charge the full-text of several hundred books, most of which are classic works in the public domain. The site is searchable or can be browsed from within four main categories: Reference, Verse, Fiction, or Nonfiction.

The Complete Works of Shakespeare
Maintained by MIT, this site offers full-text of Shakespeare's plays. Presented in an easy-to-read format, each play contains a table of contents with links allowing quick access to the various scenes.

Poets.org
The Web site of the Academy of American Poets, Poets.org features full-text for over 1,250 poems as well as biographical information on over 450 poets, over 100 sound clips of poetry readings, critical essays, and discussion forums.

Representative Poetry Online
An electronic version of the venerable print anthology of the same name, Representative Poetry Online contains full-text of over 2,900 English-language poems by over 400 poets spanning the Old English period to the present day. Hosted by the University of Toronto Libraries, the site also contains criticism, biographical information, and a timeline of English poetry dating from 658 CE.

Wright American Fiction, 1851-1875
The Wright American Fiction Project offers digitized versions of nearly 3,000 fiction titles published in the United States between 1851 and 1875. A joint collaboration of the libraries of the Big Ten universities, the project features works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Mark Twain. The Citation Searches feature allows one to search by author, title, or publisher.
