Databases

The following annotations describe the business-related databases to which FLITE subscribes. The use of these databases is restricted to Ferris-affiliated faculty, students, and staff. Those affiliated with Ferris, please click here for directions for off-campus use.

Business Newsbank
News articles covering companies, industries, executives and products including current information on small companies not readily available elsewhere from more than 500 U.S. local, regional, national newspapers, newswires and business journals. All articles are full text.

Mergent Online
Mergent Online is the online equivalent of the print Moody's/Mergent manuals. Use this database to find information on a company including their history, officers, bond ratings, and detailed financial information. Companies can even be compared to similar companies based upon a wide range of financial information.

General OneFile
A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles, many with images. Updated daily.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
This expansive database offers full text articles in five major areas including a Business section that contains company news and financial information.

National Trade Databank
National Trade Database provides a wealth of data relating to trade and trade services. A good source of information on countries as well.

Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage
NetAdvantage gives easy access to data on companies, executives, industries, stocks, bonds and mutual funds--and solid investment advice from top analysts. All of this in one comprehensive service, from the world's most trusted provider of business, financial and investment information, Standard and Poor's.

Westlaw Campus
Use this database to find case law from all 50 states and federal cases. Additionally there are articles from law review journals and legal encyclopedias.

Wilson Business
Provides complete and accurate indexing and abstracting of leading business magazines. Offers 50-to-150-word abstracts written by subject experts for each article and gives citations (but not abstracts) for book reviews. Include links to many full-text articles.

Bloomberg
One of the most visited sites on the Internet for business information, Bloomberg is a good site for business, finance, and commodity information. It is updated continuously.

CNNfn
CNNfn, the web version of the cable network, is updated continuously throughout the day and provides timely news articles related to the business world as well as articles geared for individual investors and for those seeking information about the business world. You can also create a personal portfolio of investments.

Financial Times
US and world news from the premier British financial newspaper. Some of the site requires a paid subscription.

USAToday Money Section
Good site for quick business information available at a glance. Links to more lengthy articles as well. You can create a personal investment portfolio as well.

Company Information

Annual Report Gallery
The Report Gallery is the most complete and up-to-date listing of Annual Reports and related financial reports online today. The Report Gallery currently lists over 2,200 Annual Reports and covers the majority of the fortune 500 companies.

EDGAR
The SEC requires all public companies (except foreign companies and companies with less than $10 million in assets and 500 shareholders) to file registration statements, periodic reports, and other forms electronically through EDGAR. Anyone can access and download this information for free. Here you'll find links to a complete list of filings available through EDGAR and instructions for searching the EDGAR database.

Hoover's
Hoover's provides capsule information on over 8,500 companies. Additional information includes news articles and some financial information on the company. Some of the site requires a fee to access, but the free material is quite good. Business headlines are also available.

Directories

Big Book
Search business by category or business name. Other options allow you to search for a business near an address.

Europages
Directory of over 50,000 European companies arranged by topic. Available in a wide variety of languages.

NAICS
NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is replacing the SIC codes. However, many business directories still use the older SIC code in conjunction with the NAICS code. You can locate the NAICS code at this site.

Standard Industrial Classification Search
This page allows the user to search the 1987 version SIC manual by keyword, to locate the assigned SIC code for any business. Please note that these codes are being phased out, but many directories still use them.

Exchange Information

American Stock Exchange
The home page of the American Stock Exchange which is a comprehensive resource for investors and issuers seeking the unique market environment offered at the American Stock Exchange.

NASDAQ
The home page of NASDAQ market, which trades all issues electronically. Quotes, prices and graphs are available here as well as market news.

NYSE
The home page of the New York Stock Exchange provides information on the companies that trade on the exchange. Quotes, news and other information are available for the companies listed there.

Big Charts
From CBS Marketwatch, a very good site with great looking charts. One unique feature is the ability to get an historic price quote on a stock or mutual fund. Also provides links to news articles about your quote and general business news as well.

Bureau of Economic Analysis
BEA seeks to strengthen the understanding of the U.S. economy and its competitive position by providing the most accurate and relevant GDP and economic accounts data in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
A bevy of statistics relating to the economy and production in the United States. Go here to find information on the CPI, unemployment, production etc. Regional sources are also available which provides a more local flavor of the economy

ICI Mutual Fund Connection
The Mutual Fund Connection, produced by the Investment Company Institute, tracks the Mutual Fund industry and provides a number of useful statistics about the industry.
