Databases

The following annotations describe the art-related databases to which FLITE subscribes. The use of these databases is restricted to Ferris-affiliated faculty, students, and staff. Those affiliated with Ferris, please click here for directions for off-campus use.

Art Abstracts
Art Abstracts includes detailed citation information for over 300 periodicals. Subjects covered include art, art history, the decorative arts, industrial design and photography, as well as a plethora of related subjects. Periodicals, museum bulletins, and yearbooks pertaining to art are provided; additionally, art reproductions are furnished, provided these are included in the periodicals indexed.

Dissertation Abstracts
Dissertation Abstracts contains citations for over 1.5 million theses and dissertations completed in North America and Europe since 1861. Abstracts for dissertations are available from 1980 and for theses from 1988.

Humanities Abstracts
Art is among the topics in the Humanities covered in this database. Mostly indexing journal articles, citations extend back to 1984.

Directories

ArtLex Art Dictionary
ArtLex Art Dictionary includes several thousand terms relating to art and visual culture.  An easy-to-use Index is located at the left of the screen, and provides users with alphabetical prefix breakdowns that link to a plethora of major headings and sub-topics.  Numerous cross-references are provided within the individual essays, as are additional links, cross-references, notes for pronunciation, thumbnail images, and quotations from artists.

Fine Art Directory
Art sites, artist rings, and art organizations are provided at this site. Some twenty-five links (with accompanying logos) are furnished on the opening page, and several hundred links are listed within these major offerings. All historical periods in art are represented, and links to kinetic sculpture are provided.

La Médiathèque du Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal
An extensive listing of galleries, museums, associations, and organizations devoted to art. The disciplines of drawing, printmaking, painting, performance (dance, music, and theatre), photography, sculpture, and video/film are furnished, as are documentary resources and research products. Exhibitions, additional links (subdivided geographically), as well as a search button are included, and the site is given in either French or English.

Guides

All Movie Guide (AMG)
An exhaustive resource devoted to film. The site includes a film finder, people finder, quick browse, glossary, and essays on a plethora of film genres. The searching helps are easy to use, requiring the user to input a name (e.g., actor, director, choreographer, crew), the title of the film, or the characters portrayed in a given film. The glossary includes information on censorship, legalities, camera techniques, editing, lighting, special effects, sound, etc. Additional features include keyword and plotline search helps.

Societies

American Ceramic Society Home Page
Information on society membership, meetings and expositions, publications, education, and the promotion of ceramics is furnished at this site. Includes contact information, current ceramics news, and a list of “Hot Topics.”

British Arts: A Comprehensive Listing of the Arts in the UK
An ambitious site emanating from Reading, England which includes a substantial number of links to societies (national and international), associations, and organizations pertaining to art and artists. The visual and performing arts are included, as are galleries, competitions, and information on funding and career opportunities in the arts. Links to individual British artists' Web sites are provided, as is an extensive alphabetized list of English Authors of the 19th and 20th Centuries; this list also includes notable earlier authors.

Voice of the Shuttle
Covering virtually all aspects of humanities and humanities-related arenas of thought, this web resource provides users with a plethora of scholarly and informational links. Anthropology, art, history, literature, music, philosophy, religion, politics, science, and women’s studies barely scratch the surface of this extensive site. Useful features include a "New Links Suggested by Users" area and form, whereby users may suggest sites for possible inclusion.

World Wide Arts Resources
An interactive gateway to the visual and performing arts, this site features information on artists, museums, galleries, appraisals, art agencies, art education, are history, art forums, and art chat rooms. Links for dance and theater are included, and information on employment opportunities is provided. Alphabetized portfolios are furnished as well.
