Ferris Institute took over the kindergarten classes for Big Rapids, Michigan in 1896 to provide teacher training for their students. A number of the books within the Rare Books Collection relate to curricula offered at Ferris. Some topics of interest include the history of kindergartens, printing, pharmacy and vocational education.

This collection focuses on books which are rare either because of their age or because of some other unique quality.

Because this collection was gathered together because of its unique items, it is a section that is accessible by patrons but more secure than general stacks so that it is preserved for future use. Therefore, materials may not be checked out.
