Historical Note
Few faculty committees predate the creation of the Representative Faculty Advisory Council in 1958. The RFAC was created in 1958 to address accreditation concerns about a lack of faculty governance. However, the Athletic Advisory Committee was one of those committees that already existed. It is first listed within the Ferris Institute catalog for the 1954-1955 school year. In a letter to the committee written in September 1963, President Victor F. Spathelf stated that he considered the purpose of the committee was to act in an advisory capacity to the athletic director and the coaching staff. The committee also acted as the advisory body to the President as he made decisions concerning the athletic program.
Early responsibilities of the committee included athletic eligibility determination, approving schedules and the occasional policy. The committee had a remarkable stability in membership, with chairs usually serving between five and 10 years. The committee in its current format consists of representatives from each college, a faculty athlete representative, a student representative, the registrar's office, the athletic director and the sports information coordinator. The athletic advisory committee reports to the Academic Senate. It has consistently served as the arbiter of policies concerning athletics and schedules.
Among the other types of project undertaken by the committee at various periods are such subjects as academic standards for athletes, awards, class excuses, tuition remission or accreditation/compliance studies for such organizations as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Divisions I and II). They also support athletic events and handle such activities as the marking of lines.

Scope and Content Note
The Athletic Advisory committee serves as a faculty contact point for the athletic programs at Ferris State University. These programs include intramural programs, Division II athletic teams and the Division I hockey team. The committee also acts as a liaison and advocate to the greater Ferris community concerning sports teams.
The records are arranged in a single series. This collection is actually a split collection- with both electronic and paper files being available. Records after 2001 are only available through the institutional repository in a pdf format. Within the paper chronological files of earlier years are the basic records of the committee by year- agendas, correspondence, publicity and minutes when available. Electronic records contain only minutes. All records deal with similar topics- scheduling, rules, policies and special projects. The records from the 1960s also contain several eligibility lists. Eligibility related records are not found in the record after the 1970s.
