Historical Note
The National Council of Teachers of English was founded in 1911 as part of the progressive education movement. It began following a conference on the teaching of language arts. The organization's purpose is to advance teaching, learning and student achievement in English language arts at all levels.
The Conference on College Composition and Communication was first held in 1949. The first conference was at the Stevens Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Topics on the agenda for the two day meeting including: basic freshman composition courses concepts, course organizational theories, the need for research, keeping competent staff and the need to integrate composition between the high school and college levels.

Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of programs gathered by Language and Literature departmental faculty members who attended programs by the National Council of Teachers of English as a part of their professional development. The collection consists solely of programs, some of which are annotated. It lists program activities but does not provide transcripts of the actual presentations. It is possible, although not clear from the records, that a Ferris faculty member may have actually presented at the conference.

Provenance (Acquisition Information)
These records were donated to the University Archives by Ruth Mirtz, Language and Literature departmental faculty member, in May 2006.
Processing Information
The National Council of Teachers of English Convention Collection was processed to the folder level by Melinda McMartin Isler in May 2006. A finding aid was prepared in a word processing format and converted to EAD 1.0. A collection level MARC-21 record was prepared and placed in the library online public access catalog.
