Using Write-N-Cite

Write-N-Cite is a plug-in utility that formats in-line citations along with reference lists or bibliographies. The Write-N-Cite plug-in inserts "place holder" tags for your chosen citation into your document as you are typing. Once you have saved and named the document, all you need to do is choose your ciation style and click Create, the formating is completed in seconds. To use Write-N-Cite you must first download a plug-in that works with your Microsoft Word program. Follow the steps below for downloading instructions and using Write-N-Cite with Word.

Using Write-N-Cite with Word

Write-N-Cite works best when you use Internet Explorer as your browser and Microsoft Word as your word processing software.

The following directions assume you are using this combination. If you are not, you can view RefWork's tutorial on One Line/Cite View to learn a different method.

Step: 1 First open Write-N-Cite either from Word or from your desktop. Write-N-Cite will open the RefWorks Login screen. Enter your login information.

Step: 2 When using Write-N-Cite it is easiest to work if you choose the option in the Write-N-Cite window "Always on Top." This always places the Write-N-Cite window on the top of your Word document. If you want to move the Write-N-cite window from view, simply drag the window out of your view, or minimize the window.

Step: 3 Your RefWorks database will open in the "All Reference" view. Choose the folder of references you wish to use for your paper. NOTE: The status bar will indicate whether you currently have a word document open. If you haven't yet opened a document click on the Load It link.

Note: The view name changes to the folder you have chosen.

Step: 4 With your cursor in the location in your paper where you wish to insert the citation, click in your Write-n-Cite database window on the word "Cite" next to the reference you wish to add into your text. NOTE: RefWorks inserts a place holder tag in your text. This is NOT the actual citation, formatting will happen in Step 6.

Step: 5 Before you can format your completed paper, you must save it. Choose the "Save As" option.

Note: The name of your document changes in Write-N-Cite window.

Step: 6 Now choose Bibliography from the menu. Select your output style. Click "Create Bibliography".

Step: 7 RefWorks will notify you when your paper has been processed. Note: The name changes again in Write-N-Cite to include the word FINAL-

Step: 8 Your paper and bibliography (or list of references) will open in a new window. Save this document to your computer.

You now have two versions of your paper, one without the word FINAL, which is unformatted and contains the citation code, and one formatted document. If you need to make changes, be sure to change the unformatted document, (the one without the word FINAL- before the name), then repeat step 6. Write-N-Cite can not read an already formatted paper.
