Welcome to FSUS's Class Help page for FLITE
FLITE building

In case you missed it-

We understand a lot of information was presented in your FSUS FLITE class. Hopefully this page will help you navigate FLITE. Here is a handout to help summarize the information too.

FSUS Information

Reference

Librarians are available to help answer research questions and provide other library assistance. You can find librarians at the Oval Information Desk located on the First Floor of FLITE, by phone at 231-591-3602, by email, or via chat. More information is available at FLITE help.

Make an appointment for a research consultation with a librarian - one-on-one personal library help for any course.

Journal, Newspaper, Magazine Articles

FLITE has access to thousands of journal, newspaper, and magazine articles. Many are accessible electronically. Search Databases to locate articles on your topic. Print, microfilm, and microfiche formats are all located on the 2nd Floor.

Online Catalog

To locate books in FLITE, use the Online Catalog. Each record will provide the location of the item, which may be physical (such as FSU Main Stacks 3rd Floor) or virtual (such as FSU Internet Resources). To locate your item in the library, this call number system can be applied:

  • Main Collection: Call Numbers A - E 739 - 1st Floor
  • Main Collection: Call Numbers E 740 - Z* - 3rd Floor
  • Periodicals: Journals, Magazines and Newspapers - 2nd Floor
  • Reserve Material and Reference Collection (Books do not circulate) - 1st Floor
  • Government Documents Collection and *Temporary Housing: *Hs (Social Science), and *Ks (Law) - Lower Level

Remember- call numbers represent subjects. To find your subject, see the Library of Congress Classification Outline.

If you have any problems, you can use our FLITE maps or ask FLITE staff for help.

Off Campus Access

To access all of FLITE's electronic journal articles, books, and databases from off campus use your Ferris ID and password (same as MyFSU login). You will be prompted for this information. Additional information regarding this system can be found on the Distance Education page.

Print and Electronic Reference Books

Reference books are a great way to gather background information, explore topics, and gain a general understanding about a variety of topics. Some of our print reference books are located on the 1st Floor and some have been moved to our Main Collection so they can be checked out. Electronic Reference resources are linked as Online Encyclopedias, Dictionaries etc. on the home page and are cataloged in the Online Catalog.

The Research Process and Research Guides

FLITE provides an interactive tutorial(~3 min.)to help you learn about the research process. Check it out!
The Spybrarian stars in Ouroboros: Seven Steps to Enlightened Research.

A variety of Research Guides are available for subject searching. A collection of Diversity Guides can be found as well.

Printing

Printers are located on the First Floor near the Information Commons, on the Second Floor near the Periodicals Desk, and in the Extended Studies area. Black and white pages cost .10/page and color are .50/page. The first time you use your ID card to print, it must be initialized. Please take it to the Check-out Desk on the First Floor or the Periodicals Desk on the Second Floor for initialization. Once initialized, add money in $ increments. (Change is available in the vending room.) Machine is located at the end of the check out desk.

IKON cards can also be purchased for printing. Purchase a card for $1 from the dispenser at the end of the Check-out Desk. Add value to the card by placing card into dispenser and adding money in $ increments. A bill changer is available in the vending room. Be sure to place your card in first after purchase, or you'll get another card.

Once you have added funds to either your ID card or an IKON print card, follow these steps for printing at FLITE:

  1. Print your document using the software's print function using File --> Print instead of the print icon. (For large files, print in smaller amounts of under 10 pages.)
  2. The print server software will ask for name and password. Password is anything of your choosing.
  3. Go to print server and insert card. Print server computers are located to the right of Check-out Desk and on the Second Floor.
  4. Locate your job from the list and select it.
  5. Click on print and enter the password you used when you sent the job.
  6. Collect your printout. Don't forget your card!

For more information, including printing in color and printing from your laptop, see Printer Directions.

Study Rooms

Located throughout the three floors of FLITE are nearly 50 rooms available for check-out. They may be checked out for 4 hours. See the Check-out Desk staff.

Laptops

Laptops are available at the Check-out Desk for 4 hour use in the FLITE building.

Cell phones, Student Computers, and Noise

Cellphones should be silenced when in FLITE. You can use them to make or receive calls in the Extended Hours area, the lobby entrance, the elevator corridors on each floor, any of the enclosed stairwells, or in a study room.

Computers on 2nd and 3rd Floor provide special software (see FLITE software link) and are reserved for Ferris student/faculty/staff use only. Use them with your MyFSU username and password.

If you cannot find an open computer, please speak to the Check-out Desk staff. They may be able to open an instruction studio to provide more computers for students.

Quiet areas are designated in the 3rd Floor seating and computer areas, Lower Level seating area, and Extended Hours area (only when the main part of FLITE is closed.)

For more information see the Noise Policy.
