Resources for Off-Campus Students

If you are enrolled as an off-campus student, you may wish to make use of some special services that the Library offers, including Document Delivery and remote access to our databases. See Distance Education Library Services for additional information.

Finding Professional Journals

To find professional journals in your field, use Find a Periodical. The default search method is Title Word, meaning the search words match words in the journal titles. It's probably better to only use one or two words in the search. You may need to try several searches to get adequate results.

Also try the Category tab in Find a Periodical to generate a list of journals by selecting a category and subcategory.

Once a list has been generated, Find a Periodical provides links to the library's online access to the journals by clicking on the link for an individual journal title.

Finding Journal Articles

Please read Off-Campus Database Access for doing database searching from home.

Business / Music Industry Management

ABI/INFORM Global
ABI/INFORM has been a premier source of business and corporate information for more than 30 years, containing content from thousands of journals that help researchers track business conditions, trends, management techniques, and corporate strategies. Coverage for this database begins in 1971.

Construction Management / HVAC / Technology

Applied Science and Technology

General OneFile
General OneFile is a very large full-text database with over several million articles covering a myriad of subjects, including many fields of engineering technology. A few journals, especially older dates, give only selective full-text. Use Advanced Search if the default Subject Guide Search is not yielding relevant results.

Health Sciences

CINAHL
The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) provides comprehensive indexing of the professional literature in nursing, allied health disciplines, biomedicine, and alternative medicine from 1982 to present. Selective full-text is available for research instruments, state nursing journal articles, and critical paths.

*Click here to access a guide on using CINAHL.

Health Reference Center
This database provides access to a wide range of articles on health matters such as Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc. Full-text is available for many articles. Use Advanced Search if the default Subject Guide Search is not yielding relevant results.

Health and Wellness Resource Center
Use this database to find basic information on diseases and drugs.

PubMed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

*Click here to access a guide on using PubMed.

General

Wilson OmniFile
This completely full-text database includes articles from a wide range of subject fields including science, humanities, education and business.

Getting an Article

In the databases, if HTML or PDF full text options are available, click the link to go directly to the full text.

If full text is not an option:

Click on a link or button that says "Find It" or "See more details for locating this item".

After the "Find It" screen comes up, select the appropriate red GO button.

screen capture from SFX

If the only message you see is "Request document via Interlibrary Loan", you will need to order the article. By clicking this Go button, you will be directed to our Interlibrary Loan request system which is called Illiad. If you already have an account, just sign in. The information from the citation will already be filled out. If you don't have an account, you will need to create one.

Sometimes the "Find It" button will provide a link to the Online Catalog. This indicates that the journal is found in FLITE's print collection. The catalog will provide you information about the issues that we own and the format.

To look up whether FLITE owns a particular journal, use the Journals Tab on the library catalog page. Remember to use the journal title and NOT the article title for your search.

Gunning Fog Index

To calculate a Guning Fog Index Readability Score, try this online tool.

State of Michigan Budget

For information on Michigan's budget, see the State Budget Office site. From here, click on the link for Fiscal Year 2012 Executive Budget.

Citing Sources / RefBase

Whenever you are quoting or using information from a source, you must credit or cite that source. Failure to do so is plagiarism which can lead to expulsion from the University.

Citation Style Guide: APA (PDF)
An online version of an APA Quick Reference handout which provides the citation style for several basic types of sources, requires Adoboe Acrobat Reader.

RefBase is a citation management resource provided by the library. You can create an account and format your citations in a fraction of the time it takes to format citations without this great tool.
