ENGL 150 - Persak

FLITE Databases
FLITE subscribes to several databases which provide articles originially published in magazines, journals, and newspapers that are not freely available on the Web. Remember that if you want to use FLITE databases from off-campus, click here for instructions on how to log-in. The following are the databases we talked about in class:
General OneFile
Lexis-Nexis Newspapers
Michigan Newspapers
Wilson Select Plus
Finding Statistics
General OneFile
In General OneFile, try using the word 'statistical' as one of the search words to pull up articles which have been identified as having 'Statistical Data Included.' For example, in Advanced Search, a search for statistical information on the topic of the problem of obesity in teenagers would be typed like this: 'obesity and teenagers and statistical.' Don't forget to type 'and' in-between the search words.
Lexis-Nexis Newspapers
Lexis-Nexis provides full-text newspaper articles. Try changing the method of search to In Headline. Don't forget to change the date limit (defaults at Previous 3 Months).
Finding Michigan Sources
For information on your topic related to the state of Michigan, try these newspaper databases. Keep in mind that articles published in Michigan newspapers may not necessarily be about Michigan.
If you're working with a local topic and are not having luck in the databases, go to the U.S. Newspaper List to find your local paper's Web site. Most newspaper Web sites will give you the last week's worth of articles for free.
