    FLITE Distance Education Library Services

Every person in this class will be off-campus at some time during your coursework. Our newly-designed Distance Education website should help you with any questions you may have about reaching FLITE from wherever you are. Be sure to study it carefully and return to it often.

    Finding Journal Articles

To find journal articles on a particular topic, use the Databases available on the FLITE Web site. Some databases provide full-text (content of the articles is found directly within the database), but others only provide citations (description of where the article originally appeared in print).

Some of the databases we recommend you try include:

    General Databases

    Business Databases

    Academic OneFile
    Access World News
    WilsonSelectPlus
    ABI/Inform Global
    Business and Company Resource Center
    Business Newsbank

or click here to see all of our Databases listed by name.

    Getting the Article

Once you've found citations relevant to the topic you're working with, you may need to get a copy of the article from outside the database. Many databases now have a link called Find It which will try to find the article for you in full text. When you click on the Find It link, you will be presented with one or more options if the full text of the article is available in another FLITE database, or in print, microfiche or microfilm in the building. Click on the red "Go" button to find how to access the article.

If the only message you see is "Interlibrary Loan", you will need to request it via our InterLibrary Loan Service because Ferris does not own this journal or resource.

    Interlibrary Loan and MELCAT

Interlibrary Loan is a service provided by FLITE to request articles and books that FLITE does not own. Most often this service is used when searching for articles in FLITE databases, and you are directed through the "Find It" button to request the item. The first time you use this service, you will need to register with ILLiad, our Inter-Library Loan service. Click on the words "First Time Users" to register. You will complete a form, creating a username and password which will be used for future requests. Article requests are emailed to you in 5-10 business days (ferris email preferred), and books will be mailed to you if you are an off-campus student. On-campus students may pick up books at the Checkout Desk.

MelCat is another library service throughout Michigan which works with participating Libraries to deliver books a particular library may not own. Additional information and a step-by-step tutorial are provided by FLITE.

    Find A Periodical

To look up whether FLITE owns a particular journal if you're in a database that does not have the "Find It" feature or if you're using a citation found in a source other than one of the online databases, use either the Online Catalog or the Find a Periodical database to search for the journal title. Remember to use the journal title, not the article title for your search.

If FLITE Has the Journal . . .

If you have reached the record in the Online Catalog for a journal title, look at the boxes at the top. These will tell you which years (volumes) and what format we have. FLITE doesn't always have complete runs of journal titles, so be sure that the library has the corresponding volume number or year from your citation.

    Journal Locations:

All microforms (microfilm, microfiche, microfilm cassette), Current Periodicals, and Bound Periodicals 1996-present are on Floor 2. Bound Periodicals older than 1996 are in the Lower Level. All periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title.

    If FLITE Doesn't Have the Journal . . .
Or if you are a distance student...

If the library doesn't own the journal or have the correct volume of the journal you need, or you live too far from FLITE to come retrieve the article, you can request articles via InterLibrary Loan. See "Interlibrary Loan" above. If FLITE owns the item and you are requesting it due to distance reasons, please note this on your request.

Finding Books and eBooks in FLITE

To find books in FLITE, try using a Subject search in the Online Catalog. Many subject headings are intuitive, but if nothing comes up, use a Keyword search.

    Book Locations:

Main Stacks, Call Numbers A-H are located on the Lower Level,
Main Stacks, Call Number J-Z are located on the Third Floor,
Reference is found on the First Floor, and
Government Documents are located on the Second Floor of FLITE.

    Print and Electronic Reference Books

Reference books are a great way to gather background, explore topics, and gain a general understanding about a variety of topics. Printed reference books are located on the First Floor.

Electronic Reference Resources are found under Databases on the home page.

    Managing Citations

Documenting sources is a major part of your research work. FLITE has provided this Citation webpage for your review. As a FSU student, you are allowed to use RefWorks, a web-based citation tool provided by the University to organize your resources. Use either the FLITE web-page tutorial or the company's step-by-step tutorial to learn at your own pace. Librarians are happy to give assistance with RefWorks by phone or chat, or you can schedule an individual hands-on session. Be sure to access the database from the FLITE website and contact the FLITE Service Desk if you would like individualized RefWorks instruction or have further questions.

RefWorks Login - Click here to reach a login page to your personal RefWorks database.
FLITE RefWorks Tutorial - Use this FLITE-created tutorial to explore the different features within RefWorks and learn how each of FLITE's databases works with the software.
RefWorks.com Tutorial - RefWorks.com created this basic tutorial which allows you to briefly focus on any one particular RefWorks feature.

Other Citation Management tools are listed on the Citations webpage.
