Reminder: PILOT - Tutorial:
Off Campus Access Every person in this class will be off-campus at some time during your coursework. Our newly-designed Distance Education website should help you with any questions you may have about reaching FLITE from wherever you are. Be sure to study it carefully and return to it often. Finding Books and eBooks in FLITE
To find books in FLITE,
try using a Subject search in the online
catalog. Many subject headings are intuitive, but if
nothing comes up, either try a synonym as a Subject search
or use a Keyword
search.
Book Locations: Main Stacks, Call Numbers A-H are located
on the Lower
Level, Finding Journal Articles
To find journal articles
on a particular topic, it's necessary to use one or more
of the databases
available on the FLITE Web site. These databases cumulatively
provide indexing to thousands of journal titles. A few of
the databases provide full-text (content of the articles
is found directly within the database), but most only provide
citations (description of where the article originally appeared
in print).
Some of the databases we
recommend you try include: General
Databases Business
Databases or click
here to see all of our Databases listed by name. Getting the Article
Once you've found citations
relevant to the topic you're working with and you need to
get a copy of the articles, you'll need to verify whether
FLITE owns the particular journal in which each article
was published. Many databases now have a link called "Find
It", Interlibrary Loan and MELCAT
Interlibrary Loan is a service provided by FLITE to request articles and books that FLITE does not own. Most often this service is used when searching for articles in FLITE databases, and you are directed through the "Find It" button to request the item. The first time you use this service, you will need to register with ILLiad, our Inter-Library Loan service. Click on the words "First Time Users" to register. You will complete a form, creating a username and password which will be used for future requests. Article requests are emailed to you in 5-10 business days (ferris email preferred), and books will be mailed to you if you are an off-campus student. On-campus students may pick up books at the Checkout Desk.
MelCat is another library service throughout Michigan which works with participating Libraries to deliver books a particular library may not own. Additional information and a step-by-step tutorial are provided by FLITE.
Find A Periodical
To look up whether FLITE
owns a particular journal if you're in a database that does
not have the "Find It" feature or if you're using
a citation found in a source other than one of the online
databases, use either the Online
Catalog or the Find
a Periodical database to search for the journal title.
Remember to use the journal title not the article title
for your search. If FLITE Has the Journal
. . .
If you have reached the
record in the Online Catalog for a journal title, look at
the boxes at the top. These will tell you which years (volumes)
and what format we have. FLITE doesn't always have complete
runs of journal titles, so be sure that the library has
the corresponding volume number or year from your citation.
Journal Locations:
All microforms (microfilm,
microfiche, microfilm cassette), Current Periodicals, and
Bound Periodicals 1996-present are on Floor 2. Bound Periodicals
older than 1996 are in the Lower Level. All periodicals
are arranged alphabetically by title. If FLITE Doesn't Have
the Journal . . . If the library doesn't own
the journal or have the correct volume of the journal you
need, or you live to far from FLITE to come retrieve the article, you can request articles via InterLibrary
Loan. See "Interlibrary Loan" above. If FLITE owns the item and you are requesting it due to distance reasons, please note this on your request.
