Finding Company Information

To find information on public companies there are a number of databases available on the FLITE Web site. These databases provide access to thousands of scholarly journals and the articles published in them as well as a wealth of other information on companies

For business and companies, these databases are probably your best bets:

• Business and Company Resource Center - A great place to start on doing company research. This database provides articles on companies, financial data, swot analyses and industry information all in an easy to search interface. • ABI/Inform - A premier online database of articles on companies, many of which are available in full-text. ABI indexes over 1700 business and social science periodicals and journals from around the world and contains the full text of each day's Wall Street Journal. • Standard and Poor's Netadvantage. Great resource on company and industry information. Many sources available in PDF format for easy export. Click here for a quick overview of this database.

Finding articles when there's no Full-Text link

The Find-It links (also known as SFX or Check For Available Full Text links) will tell you if FLITE has access to an article, and link you to the article if we do.

How do you know if it's scholarly?

Many of the journals in ABI/Inform are peer reviewed. Not all of the journals in Business and Company Resource Center are. The easiest solution is to search only peer-reviewed journals in both databases. Here are some hints on determing what journals are peer-reviewed.

• Learn to use Ulrich's Periodicals Directory to find out if the journal is peer reviewed.
• Learn to use Google to find out if a journal is peer reviewed.

Finding a specific article

If you know a specific article that you want, but aren't sure what database it might be in, you can use the Citation Linker on the Journals tab of the FLITE homepage.

Finding Books or Journal Articles in Print

To find print journals or books, search the library catalog. If you want your results to show only journals (not books or dvds or anything else), use the link that says FSU Periodicals in the gray box labeled Location. You will have to scroll down to see this box.

FLITE's print journals from after the year 2000 are on the second floor, and are alphabetized by title. For journals prior to 2000, you'll need to check the lower level (below the first floor).

There are photocopiers in FLITE if you wish to make copies of articles you need for your classes.

For articles that FLITE owns, you can complete a request using ILLiad, our interlibrary loan software product. Check the Interlibrary Loan page for more information on this service. We strive for 24 hour turnaround time on these requests.

If FLITE Doesn't Own What You Need

If you're looking for a book FLITE doesn't own, you can request it through MeLCat. It usually takes 3 - 5 business days for the book to arrive. Check the MelCat page to see if your home library participates. If you are not able to use MelCat, you can request a book from us via ILL. Please be aware that we will need to mail to book to you and this can take some additional time. You are also responsible for costs associated with returning the book to us.

If you're looking for an article FLITE doesn't own, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan. We'll e-mail you when it comes in, usually within a week of your ordering it. In many instances articles arrive in a few days!

Note: An item requested via interlibrary loan could possibly take up to 20 days to get here. Plan ahead if you think you might need this service!
