FLITE Databases

FLITE subscribes to several databases which provide articles originially published in magazines, journals, and newspapers that are not freely available on the Web. Remember that if you want to use FLITE databases from off-campus, click here for instructions on how to log-in. The following are the databases we talked about in class:

General OneFile
Lexis-Nexis Newspapers
Michigan Newspapers
Wilson Select Plus

Finding Statistics

Try these databases to find statistics.

General OneFile
In General OneFile, try using the word 'statistical' as one of the search words to pull up articles which have been identified as having 'Statistical Data Included.' For example, in Advanced Search, a search for statistical information on the topic of the problem of obesity in teenagers would be typed like this: 'obesity and teenagers and statistical.' Don't forget to type 'and' in-between the concepts.

Lexis-Nexis Statistical Universe
Statistical Universe is a way to search for statistical information published by the Federal and international governments. The information in Statistical Universe is in the form of statistical tables; you won't find articles in this database. Coverage for federal statistical publications extends back to 1973, and selected full-text is available from the mid-1990s to the present.

Finding Michigan sources

For information on your topic related to the state of Michigan, try these newspaper databases. Keep in mind that articles published in Michigan newspapers may not necessarily be about Michigan.

Lexis-Nexis Newspapers
Lexis-Nexis provides full-text newspaper articles. To focus on Michigan, first click on the Sources tab. In Step 2, select United States in the Country drop-down menu, then change All Regions to Michigan. In Step 3, click on News and then then Michigan News Sources. Finally, click on the gray OK - Continue button.

Michigan Newspapers
Michigan Newspapers contains full-text newspaper articles from three major Michigan papers, including the Grand Rapids Press. Be sure to check the box for 'all Michigan sources' and select "Across All Years" from the drop-down menu before starting the search.

If you're working with a local topic and are not having luck in the databases, go to the U.S. Newspaper List to find your local paper's Web site. Most newspaper Web sites will give you the last week's worth of articles for free.
