Intramural Sports

The Intramural Sports Program offers various activities in which students, faculty, and staff may participate. The activities are comprised of individual and team events in either a league or special event tournament format. The general objectives of the Intramural Sports Program are to:

  1. Provide opportunities for students to learn and enhance skills through various games and activities.
  2. Provide employment opportunities for students to aid in their development of leadership skills.
  3. Provide an environment for social interaction and holistic fitness.
Eligibility
All FSU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to participate in the Intramural Sports Program. Each participant is responsible for the verification of his or her eligibility. All participants must present their FSU I. D. upon request by U-REC staff in order to participate.

Any player found using another individuals I. D. card to participate in an intramural activity might be barred from further intramural competition. A team, which allows an ineligible player to participate, risks forfeiting any or all games in which that individual participated.

Registration:
  1. Managers must get an intramural registration form from the U-REC office (SRC 101) or online from the U-REC website. The registration form includes sport to be played; division of play (men, women, co-rec); league affiliation (Greek, Residence Hall, Open, Faculty/Staff); skill level (beginner, intermediate, advanced); day preference (Sun/Mon/Wed or Sun/Tue/Thu); team name; manager information; and team roster with player information.
  2. Every player must personally sign the informed liability release on the team roster section of the registration form before they are eligible to compete.
  3. Managers must submit the intramural registration form to the U-REC office by the publicized entry deadline to ensure a spot in the league.
  4. Any entries received after the entry deadline will be entered into a league on availability basis only.
  5. Teams may choose their own team name with the professional staff at the U-REC office reserving the right to change a team name if they feel it is inappropriate.
  6. The entry fee for intramural sports activities will be charged directly to the manager's student account.
  7. Special event activity participants and intramural ice hockey participants are required to each obtain an intramural registration form and complete and return the form by the posted entry deadline.
Division and Levels of Competition

     Men, Women, and Co-Rec
  1. Check publicity flyers to determine what leagues and divisions of play are offered each semester.
  2. Women may compete on men's teams when there are not enough women's teams to hold their own league.
  3. Co-Rec teams must play with an equal number of males and females or one more or less male to female ratio on the field/court. At no time may one gender outnumber the other by more than one.
     Greek
  1. Only FSU Students registered as active members or pledges of a fraternity/sorority will be allowed to participate for a Greek organization.
  2. Any fraternity/sorority member not participating for their respective organization may participate for a residence hall or open team.
  3. Co-Rec teams with a combination of members from both a fraternity and sorority may participate in the Open division.
     Residence Hall
  1. Open to all FSU students living in campus housing units or other University Approved campus housing units. (i.e. residence halls, family housing, campus apartments, etc.)
  2. If a residence hall does not have an intramural team, individuals living in campus housing may participate for another residence hall or in the open division.
     Open

Open to all FSU students not participating in a Greek or Residence Hall division.

* Individuals may only play on one intramural team during a season (men, women). If a co-rec league is run in conjunction with a men's and women's league, an individual may play on both a men's or women's team and a co-rec team, but can never play on two or more men's, women's or co-rec teams simultaneously.

Skill Levels

Each registration form will allow the captain to rate their team's basic ability in the sport. These ratings will be used to place teams into divisions with teams of equal ability WHEN AVAILABLE. If there are not enough teams of a particular skill level in a league, all teams will be placed together.

Responsibilities of Team Managers
  1. Team managers are responsible for the eligibility and conduct of their players and spectators.
  2. A player is not eligible to participate in an intramural activity until they have signed the team roster and read and signed the liability waiver form on the back of the intramural entry form.
  3. Teams may add additional players to their team roster before the end of regular season play. Once playoffs begin, team rosters are frozen.
  4. A team representative must attend the manager's meeting to receive U-REC policies, sports specific rules and other pertinent information for the success of the team in the intramural sports program.
  5. Team managers are required to become familiar with the rules and to distribute copies of rules and team schedules to each of their team members.
  6. Team schedules will be available both online and posted at U-REC.
  7. Team managers are reminded that no information regarding game times or locations will be given out over the phone by U-REC receptionists, so please make sure all team members have schedules!

Spectators

* University Recreation wants spectators to know that they are more than just a spectator, they are part of the game. The spectators' participation is important to the outcome of the contest. Please keep in mind it is still just a game. Have fun and encourage your own team, rather than discourage your opponent. Remember the team that you are cheering for may be adversely affected (i.e. given poor sportsmanship ratings, or forced to forfeit) if spectators' behaviors are inappropriate.
  1. Spectators may observe intramural activities and must comply with the policies that have been set by U-REC staff.
  2. Team managers are ultimately responsible for the conduct of their spectators.
  3. Indoor sports, i.e. basketball, floor hockey, indoor soccer, volleyball have limited spectator seating; therefore admittance of spectators may be limited.
  4. Outdoor sports, i.e. softball, flag football, roller hockey have sufficient spectator seating area, therefore there is no limit to number of spectators allowed, but they must remain in spectator area (not in dugouts, or on playing field or court).
  5. Spectators are encouraged to support their team and to not berate or attempt to intimidate opponents or officials.
  6. Any volatile or unruly acts by a spectator will be handled by U-REC staff and FSU Public Safety; then if necessary referred to Student Judicial Services.
Sports Rules
  1. Intramural sports rules will be distributed and discussed at the manager's meeting prior to each intramural season. The team manager is responsible for their teams' knowledge and adherence to these rules.
  2. Each sports rules are adopted and governed by NIRSA, NCAA, MHSAA, ASA, USA, and USVBA rules (or any combination of these).
  3. The U-REC department reserves the right to modify or change the rules for any sport, at any time, during the regular season or playoffs to ensure the safety of participants and the integrity of the game.
  4. Managers will be notified of any rule change before it is implemented.
Conduct/Sportsmanship
  1. Team managers are ultimately responsible for the conduct of their players and spectators. Any concerns or difficulties with an individual's conduct will be handled through the manager.
  2. Teams will be rated on their sportsmanship by game officials following each game based on the actions and behaviors of team members before, during, and after the contest.
  3. Teams will not qualify for the playoffs if they have a cumulative rating of less than a "B" average at the end of the regular season.
  4. Any team receiving a "C" or lower grade will be notified in writing by the Assistant Director.
  5. The Rating Scale is as follows:
Grade Points Received Description
A 4 points Excellent Sportsmanship
B 3 points Good Sportsmanship
No major problems, possibly one warning
C 2 points Average Sportsmanship
Some verbal dissent, possibly one ejection
D 1 point Below Average Sportsmanship
Continuous problems, possibly two ejections or game forfeiture
* If a team receives a "C or D" rating and a player or players have been ejected, the player(s) and team are not eligible to compete again until ejected players have met with the Assistant Director.
F 0 points Pool - Unacceptable sportsmanship
Completely uncooperative, majority of team is unruly
* If a team receives an "F" rating the manager must meet with the Assistant Director before they or their team is eligible to compete again.
Playoffs
There are three factors considered when determining a teams eligibility:
  1. Team representatives attendance at manager's meeting.
  2. Team must have a cumulative sportsmanship rating of "B" or better.
  3. Team cannot forfeit two contests during the regular season.
* Teams which are not represented at the manager's meeting may be allowed another opportunity to "work their way back" into they playoffs by meeting the following requirements:
  1. Team must receive all "A" and "B" sportsmanship ratings during the regular season.
  2. Team may not forfeit or default any contest during the regular season.
  3. In order to determine an all campus champion, regular season day preferences cannot be adhered to during playoffs. Teams will be required to play on any given day at any given time.
  4. The U-REC office reserves the right to modify the playoff season by shortening it due to weather conditions or number of eligible playoff teams.
  5. Teams are required to maintain a "B" average sportsmanship rating during the playoffs. If a team receives a "C" rating the manager must meet with the Assistant Director the following day to discuss their teams status.
  6. If a team receives a "D" or lower rating they will be eliminated from playoff competition.
  7. If the rating is following the team's final contest the rating may impact the teams and/or individuals eligibility for the next intramural activity in which the team and/or individual participates.
Cancellations/Defaults/Forfeit      Cancellations
  1. Games that are canceled due to inclement weather or other reasons will not be rescheduled.
  2. Once decisions have been made to cancel a game, all subsequent games will also be canceled.

Circumstances which may result in a team forfeit include:
  1. Game time is a forfeit time.

Protests
There are two types of protests that may be filed:
  1. Player Ineligibility
  2. Rule Interpretation
Questions of judgment by officials or supervisors are not protestable.
  • Team managers must file intent to protest at the time the incident occurs. Following the contest, the team manager must submit a written statement of the protest (with specific player in question if player eligibility protest; or specific rule they feel was misinterpreted if rule interpretation protest) to the U-REC office by 4pm the next business day.
  • If anyone other than the team manager files protest then it will not be considered.
  • Protests will not be heard if the team protesting has won the contest in question (exception: player eligibility).
  • The Assistant Director will make rulings on protests and both team managers will be contacted with the outcome.
Insurance/Injury
  1. U-REC strongly recommends that each participant and spectator carry his or her own medical and dental insurance. The University and its staff are not responsible for any injuries incurred by a participant or spectator in University Recreation programs. All medical expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the participant or spectator. Injuries are an inherent risk in all recreational activities including intramural sports.
  2. The intramural supervisor must be notified immediately when an injury occurs during an intramural contest. These individuals are First Aid and CPR trained and will assist the injured participant or spectator. Please cooperate fully with the staff so the injury can be handled properly and expeditiously.
