Hall Director Job Description

Ferris State University invites application for Residence Hall Directors with the Department of Residence Life. Ferris State University is a state funded institution enrolling 13, 532 students for the fall 2008 classes, including 9,667 on the main Big Rapids, Michigan Campus. The Big Rapids campus is located in scenic West Michigan on the Muskegon River near the Manistee National Forest. Big Rapids is surrounded by the great outdoors but we're within a 45 minute drive of a major urban city, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ferris State University has 20 Residence Halls (ranging in size from 110-380 residents) and a 388 unit apartment community on campus. Together these residential facilities house more than 4000 students on campus.

 FSU HDs provide comprehensive supervision of 1-3 residence halls or the 388 unit apartment community. Hall Directors recruit, train, supervise, and mentor residence hall staff; 6-17 Resident Advisors/Community Advisors, 1-3 Desk Service Managers and 15-30 desk and security personnel, actively participate on departmental and university-wide committees, manage facilities, advise Hall Council and train RA staff to advise House Councils, coordinate programming/community development and provide overall leadership in the academic, social and emotional development of students.  In addition, Hall Directors serve as conduct hearing officers adjudicating cases and recommending educational sanctions up to and including dismissal from the university. 

This is a full-time 12 month, live-in position. Compensation package includes a $29,000 salary (with Master’s degree), air conditioned apartment, meal plan, and a competitive benefits package.   

Requirements:  A Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field is strongly preferred.  Bachelor’s degree with two or more years of progressive residential life experience required including; staff training and development, supervision and evaluation, program planning and implementation, facilities management, basic computer applications, and adjudicating student conduct experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to proactively work with diverse populations. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills, as well as high energy and excitement.
