The Ferris State University Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive Scholarship
The Ferris State University Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive Scholarship provides full tuition for outstanding students of Detroit Public Schools who plan to enroll in a four-year degree program at Ferris. Financial need is not a factor in the scholarship, and payment of full tuition and fees is guaranteed.
The President's Council and 15 state universities of Michigan formally
endorsed a full tuition scholarship to selected minority students who met
certain academic standards in high school. During the past two decades, a
concerted effort has been made to increase the number and proportion of minority
students enrolled in Michigan's public universities. Although the number
of minority students increased significantly during the mid 1970's this
promising trend was not sustained during the late 1970's and through the mid
1980's due to low high school graduation rates of Native Americans, African
American and Hispanics. Although these rates have improved recently, the
progress has been sporadic and the overall pool of college bound minority
students is still far behind that of that of other segments of the population.
The objective of the McCree Incentive Scholarship Program is to provide an
incentive for minority students throughout the state to reach high levels of
academic achievement and ultimately pursue a college or university degree.
