GREEK RECRUITMENT
All
Panhellenic and
Interfraternity Council organizations hold organized recruitment events in both fall and winter semesters. Professional Fraternity Council and
Black Greek Council
organizations hold individual events throughout the year and announce their informational meetings through posters on campus. Recruitment events give students the opportunity to learn more about the fraternities and sororities on campus, and for the members of Greek-letter organizations to get to know interested students.
Every fraternity and sorority establishes a minimum grade point average requirement for membership. Organizations look for members who want to succeed academically, be involved with community service, and expand their group of lasting friends. Membership in a fraternity or sorority lasts a lifetime, not just for the time members attend college.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
By affiliating with a Greek organization, the personal development you will experience is remarkable. You may not realize it, but those around you will. Greek organizations sponsor programs to aid in this personal development. The topics of interest vary from women's issues, to community service opportunities, to drug and alcohol abuse seminars. Some of the recent programs sponsored or co-sponsored by Greeks at FSU are:
- Greek Leadership Summit
- Crossing the Line
- S.A.L.A.D
- TIPS: Training in Intervention Procedures
Not only do we bring speakers here to FSU, but there are many opportunities to travel to conferences beneficial to you as an individual, and also you your chapter and national organization. These conferences include:
- MGCA: Mid American Greek Council Association
- National Black Greek Conference
- UIFI: Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute
- Greek Leadership Conference
- National/International Convention
- Homecoming Greek Week
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Although the Greek system is a far cry from the animal House reputation of past decades, we still know how to have a great time. Throughout the year, Greeks hold social events, including All Greek Socials, Chapter Retreats, Fundraisers, Greek Week, Intramural Sports Teams (men, women, and co-ed), Greek Mixers/Parties, and Semi-Formals/Formals. Many of these events are alcohol-free, and those events where alcohol is present are regulated to prevent underage drinking and binge drinking.
When you become part of a fraternity or sorority you will gain friends for a lifetime. Whether it is someone to grab a meal with at the cafeteria, a trip to the mall, or just someone to talk to, you will always have a friend.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Service to those around us is a huge part of Greek Life. Each fraternity and sorority on FSU's campus dedicates itself to a specific charity. In addition to individual philanthropic events each chapter holds, the Greek community comes together to do community-wide service projects. Greek life consists of many food and clothing drives, as well as donating personal time to those in the community. Some examples of the service Greeks have provided the community are:
- Teeter Totter-a-Thon
- NFK Rock-a-Thon
- Paint-a-Thon
- A Perfect Party
Fraternities and Sororities also participate in national community service and fundraising events including: Make a Difference Day, Race for the Cure, March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Walk for Warmth, and Bowl for Kids Sake.
