InitiativesThe AFE seeks to build an inclusive Ferris State University that is welcoming of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer employees and our allies through education and advocacy. The organization promotes speakers, exhibits, forums, and other educational events to increase understanding of LGBTQA issues. Our activities are consistent with the University’s definition of diversity, which includes sexual orientation and gender identity, and with the Diversity Plan's Strategic Goals 1 & 2, which call upon the campus community “to create a University that is welcoming to diverse populations” and “to hire and retain a diverse workforce.” These laudable statements of support for our community members point the way to what is currently our chief concern: Ferris State University is one of the only public universities in Michigan that does not yet offer an expanded benefits plan to cover our family members. The time has come to attend to this need and to strengthen Ferris State University’s relevance and competitiveness in the state and in this global marketplace. Our members are prepared to the lead the way on this issue, but we hope in the months ahead that this concern will be a rallying point for multiple constituencies. Together we can build a stronger University. We look to the University’s leadership to embrace the opportunity in this situation and to leave no doubt as to its commitment to a vibrant and diverse workforce at Ferris State University. |
