Junior Standout Earns Weekly Award Recognition
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) of the 2004 Ferris State women's cross country team has claimed Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Runner of the Week Award recognition for her performance at last Friday's (Sept. 17) Michigan State Spartan Open held at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The announcement was made Tuesday (Sept. 21) by the league office.
Irwin placed 22nd overall (22:47) in the 6K non-scoring event, which included runners from NCAA Divisions I and II institutions. In addition, she was the highest-placing runner from a Division II school in the 147-participant field. The race was Irwin's second this season.
In FSU's first meet this campaign, Irwin took second place (18:42.4) in the 5K Central Michigan Drenth Invitational (Sept. 3) at Mount Pleasant, Mich.
A two-year letterwinner, Irwin claimed first-team All-GLIAC accolades last season with a seventh-place (22:29.8) finish at the 2003 GLIAC Cross Country Championships (10/25) hosted by Ferris State at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. She also received 2003 Division II Cross Country Coaches Association Individual All-Academic Award recognition.
Besides cross country, Irwin also qualified for and took part in the 1,500 meters at the 2004 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 27-29) in Walnut, Calif., after previously breaking the school’s outdoor record by placing fourth overall (4:33.11) in the event at the 2004 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 6-7) at Hillsdale, Mich. A 2003-04 GLIAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team honoree, Irwin captured indoor all-conference recognition and posted the school’s second-best all-time effort (10:20.78) by winning the 3,000 meters at the league’s indoor track and field championships (Feb. 27-28) last season in Findlay, Ohio.
The Ferris State women's cross country team will host the annual Bulldog Invitational this Friday (Sept. 24) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. The women's race begins at 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
