Nov. 8: Ferris Concludes Season With Ninth-Place Regional Finish
The Ferris State women’s cross country team concluded the 2003 campaign by taking part in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday (Nov. 8) at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hudsonville, Mich.
The Bulldog women’s team placed ninth overall with 212 points in the 19-team field, which was won by meet host Grand Valley State with 35 points. Also qualifying for the NCAA-II National Championships in the women’s division were Northern Michigan (82 points), Southern Indiana (96 points) and Wayne State (141 points). GVSU's Natalie Ewing was the individual winner in a time of 21:31.3. Breanne Steffens from Southern Illinois, who finished second overall, and Kristina Owen from Michigan Tech were individual national qualifiers.
Junior Rachel Cox placed 12th overall (22:29.6) on the 6K course in the 134-runner women’s field while garnering all-region recognition for Ferris State. Sophomore Jenny Irwin finished 20th (22:47.7), freshman Julia Viel was 34th (23:08.1), sophomore Leanna Wolf placed 74th (24:05.7) and junior Mary Miller captured 80th place (24:22.3) for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Kathryn Lange took 87th (24:40.0) and sophomore Crystal Flutur was 90th (24:45.0) in the race.

Oct. 25: Bulldogs Finish Sixth At 2003 GLIAC Championships
The Ferris State University men’s and women’s cross country programs hosted the 2003 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships Saturday (Oct. 25) at FSU’s Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris placed sixth overall in the 15th annual women's championships with 133 points. Grand Valley State won the women's race with 27 points.
Sophomore Jenny Irwin led the women's team as she earned first-team all-conference accolades with a seventh-place finish (22:29.8) in the 6K event. Junior Rachel Cox placed 11th overall (22:39.0) to garner second-team All-GLIAC recognition in the 142-runner field.
Freshman Julia Viel took 20th place (22:51.4), junior Mary Miller finished 43rd (23:23.8) and sophomore Crystal Flutur placed 65th (23:50.0) for Ferris State. Sophomore Leanna Wolf captured 69th place (24:02.3), sophomore Kathryn Lange was 75th (24:10.1) and sophomore Geneva Jones placed 77th (24:17.9).

Oct. 10: Ferris Places Seventh At Michigan Intercollegiate Championships
The Ferris State women’s cross country team took part in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships Friday (Oct. 10) at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hudsonville, Mich.
The Bulldog women’s team placed seventh overall in the 6K women’s division with 187 points. Michigan State claimed the team championship in the 15-team race with 17 points while Northern Michigan finished second with 69 points.
Sophomore Jenny Irwin placed 24th overall (23:20) to lead the Bulldog women. Freshman Julia Viel was 34th (23:37), junior Rachel Cox placed 36th (23:37), sophomore Leanna Wolf finished 49th (24:05) and junior Mary Miller captured 50th place (24:06) for Ferris State.
Sophomore Geneva Jones came in 52nd (24:14), sophomore Crystal Flutur took 67th place (24:50) and sophomore Kathryn Lange finished 75th overall (25:13) in the 123-competitor division.
The Bulldogs will host the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT). The meet will be held at FSU’s Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Oct. 4: Ferris Takes Part In 31st Annual Loyola Lakefront Invitational
The Ferris State women's cross country team took part in the 31st annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday (Oct. 4) at Montrose Beach in Chicago, Ill.
The Bulldogs placed sixth overall among the non-NCAA Division I schools participating in the race. FSU tallied 223 points in the 35-team division, which was won by Edinboro (Pa.) with 63 points.
Junior Rachel Cox led the women's team with a 73rd place showing in a time of 19:01 on the 5K course. Sophomore Jenny Irwin placed 81st (19:04), freshman Julia Viel was 101st (19:21), sophomore Crystal Flutur took 169th place (20:03) and sophomore Leanna Wolf captured 184th place (20:12).
Sophomore Geneva Jones was 193rd overall (20:15), junior Mary Miller finished 214th (20:29) and sophomore Kathryn Lange placed 263rd (21:01) in the 560-runner division.
Ferris State will return to action Friday, Oct. 10, as the Bulldogs compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships at Allendale, Mich. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. (EDT) start.

Sept. 26: Bulldogs Claim Home Invitational Championship
The Ferris State women's cross country team totaled 35 points en route to winning the annual Bulldog Invitational for the second consecutive year Friday (Sept. 26) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris, which had three runners finish among the top 10 competitors in the 68-participant field, outdistanced second-place Grand Valley State which had 61 points. Lake Superior State placed third with 88 points in the seven-team race.
Junior Rachel Cox finished second overall for Ferris State in a time of 19:10.70 on the 5K course. Sophomore Jenny Irwin took fifth place (19:22.20), freshman Julia Viel was 10th (19:41.60), junior Mary Miller placed 11th (19:45.90) and sophomore Crystal Flutur captured 17th place (19:54.60) for Ferris State. Sophomore Leanna Wolf was 24th overall (20:09.00), sophomore Kathryn Lange took 27th (20:23.10) and sophomore Geneva Jones placed 32nd (20:50.80) for FSU.
Ferris State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill. The race is set for a 11 a.m. (EDT) start.

Sept. 19: Bulldogs Finish Eighth At Michigan State Spartan Open
The Ferris State women's cross country team placed eighth overall in the Michigan State Spartan Open held Friday (Sept. 19) at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
FSU tallied a team score of 267 among the 11 schools participating in the 6K event. Michigan State claimed the women's team title with 47 points, Illinois was second (74) and Ohio State placed third (85).
Junior Rachel Cox placed 37th overall (23:10.1) in the 188-runner event to lead the Bulldogs. Freshman Julia Viel finished 46th (23:25.0), sophomore Jenny Irwin was 73rd (24:12.3), sophomore Kathryn Lange took 74th (24:13.3), sophomore Crystal Flutur was 75th (24:14.2) and sophomore Leanna Wolf captured 84th place (24:25.7) for FSU.
Ferris sophomore Geneva Jones placed 88th (24:36.7), junior Mary Miller was 92nd (24:57.3) and sophomore Kristen Balla took 104th (25:40.4).

Sept. 5: Bulldogs Capture Five Of Top Seven Spots At Northwood Invitational
The Ferris State women's cross country squad captured five of the top seven spots Friday (Sept. 5) at the Northwood Invitational in Midland, Mich. No team scores were kept in the meet.
Junior Rachel Cox led the Bulldogs as she clocked 19:49.30 to finish first among 37 participants in the 5K event. Sophomore Jenny Irwin took second place (19:51.10) and junior Mary Miller placed fifth (20:15.10).
Sophomore Crystal Flutur finished sixth (20:26.20) for FSU, sophomore Kathryn Lange was seventh (20:31.10) and sophomore Kristen Balla took 14th place (21:08.00). Sophomore Geneva Jones also competed and placed 16th overall (21:21.40) as all eight FSU runners finished among the top 16.
Ferris will take part in the Michigan State Spartan Open Friday, Sept. 19, in East Lansing, Mich. The event is slated to begin at 4 p.m. (EDT).

Aug. 29: FSU Women Open 2003 Campaign At Jeff Drenth Invitational
The Ferris State women's cross country squad took part in the non-scoring Central Michigan Jeff Drenth Invitational on Friday in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
In the 5K women's field, Ferris had four runners finish among the top 15 competitors. Junior Rachel Cox was eighth (19:26), sophomore Jenny Irwin finished 10th (19:48) and junior Mary Miller took 14th (20:13) place. The race included athletes from Ferris and CMU along with unattached participants.
Sophomore Crystal Flutur captured 18th (20:28) place, sophomore Kathryn Lange took 19th (20:41), sophomore Leanna Wolf was 20th (20:47) and sophomore Geneva Jones placed 21st (20:51) while sophomore Kristen Balla finished 23rd (21:40) in the 24-competitor event.
FSU will return to action Friday, Sept. 5, in the Northwood Invitational at Midland, Mich. The race is slated for a 4 p.m. (EDT) start.
The Bulldogs are coached by Jeff Kavalunas, who's entering his eighth year as head women's coach and his fifth campaign as the head men's coach.
