Nov. 4: Ferris Cross Country Wraps Up Season At Regional Championships

The Ferris State University women's and men's cross country teams wrapped up their 2006 campaigns by taking part in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships held Saturday (Nov. 4) in Kenosha, Wis. The event was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course.

The Bulldog women's squad tied for ninth place overall in the 24-team field with 752 points. Grand Valley State claimed the women's championship with 47 points and host Wisconsin-Parkside took runner-up honors with 91 points.

Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) led the Bulldogs with a 27th-place individual performance (23:04.8) on the 6K course. Freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) finished 37th overall (23:24.4) in the 164-runner field. The individual title was won by GVSU's Laura Aderman in a time of 21:13.9.

Senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) took 59th place (23:58.1), senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) placed 73rd (24:15.4) and sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) was 74th (24:17.4) in the field.

Junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) finished 95th (24:39.8) and junior Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) registered a 131st-place finish (25:34.5) for FSU.

The Bulldog men's squad netted 542 points in placing 20th of 23 teams. GVSU also won the men's division with 36 points and Wayne State came in second place with 60 points.

The men's winner was Grand Valley State's Nate Peck, who ran a time of 31:30.0 in the 157-runner field on the 10K course.

Junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) led the way for the Bulldogs with a 73rd-place overall performance (34:40.3). Senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) came in next at 114th overall (35:44.4), sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) took 116th place (35:48.1) and sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) finished 118th (35:51.5).

Sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) placed 121st (35:54.8), senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) was 130th overall (36:17.9) and freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) ended up 136th (36:34.0).

Oct. 21: Ferris Women Place Sixth, Men Eighth At GLIAC Championships

The Ferris State University women's and men's cross country teams finished sixth and eighth, respectively, at the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which were hosted Saturday (Oct. 21) by the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.

The Bulldog women's squad placed sixth overall in the 13-team field with 176 points. Grand Valley State claimed the women's championship with 27 points and host Findlay took runner-up honors with 80 points.

Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) led the Bulldogs with a 12th-place individual performance (22:27.9) on the 5K course as she earned all-conference second team recognition. Freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) also claimed All-GLIAC Second Team kudos by finishing 14th overall (22:28.7) in the 147-runner field. The individual title was won by GVSU's Laura Aderman in a time of 21:06.3.

Sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) placed 50th overall (23:30.7) for FSU, senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) was 51st (23:31.2) and senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) came in 70th (23:52.3).

Junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) finished 80th (24:10.9) and freshman Tracy Fry (Mecosta/Chippewa Hills) registered a 102nd-place finish (24:59.7).

The Bulldog men's squad netted 226 points in finishing eighth overall. GVSU also won the men's division with 24 points and Wayne State came in second place with 66 points.

The men's winner was Grand Valley State's Nate Peck, who ran a time of 24:19.5 in the 139-runner field on the 8K course.

Sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) was FSU's highest finisher as he came in 38th (26:08.4). Junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) placed 39th (26:11.3), sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) took 62nd place (26:51.6), senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) was 63rd overall (26:52.3) and freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) ended up 71st (27:17.8).

Senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) wound up 79th (27:24.0), sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) finished 81st (27:35.6) and sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) placed 94th (28:02.6). Junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) was 100th (28:05.1) in the field while freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) took 107th place (28:24.4) and freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) came in 109th (28:30.3). Freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick, Mich./Gaylord) was 110th (28:32.6) and senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) placed 133rd (29:38.7).

The Bulldogs will next take part in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 4, in Kenosha, Wis. The event, hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside, begins at 10 a.m. (EDT).

Oct. 6: Bulldogs Host Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Championships

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams hosted the annual Michigan Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships Friday (Oct. 6) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

The annual event, which included teams from all levels at schools across the state, featured five races. Both the Ferris men's and women's teams competed in the respective 4K races.

The Bulldog women finished sixth of 20 participating teams from all levels in the 4K field. Grand Valley State placed first with 24 points and Calvin was second with 40 points. Excluding the NCAA Division I schools, Ferris placed fourth in the collegiate division.

Grand Valley State's Laura Aderman claimed the individual title as she was clocked in a time of 14:10.4. The field included 172 participants.

Freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) led FSU with a 19th-place performance (15:06.6). Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) took 21st place (15:06.9), senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) came in 35th (15:27.2) and senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) finished 47th (15:39.4).

Sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) took 52nd place (15:46.3), freshman Tracy Fry (Mecosta/Chippewa Hills) recorded a 69th-place finish (16:13.1) and sophomore Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) was 87th (16:28.7).

Monroe placed 14th among the non-Division I performers while Stuart was 16th.

Junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) instead ran the women's 6K race and finished 42nd overall of 91 runners in a time of 21:11.5

Ferris placed ninth of 18 teams in the men's 4K division. The Bulldogs, who were eighth among the non-Division I schools, totaled 160 points. GVSU won the men's 4K division with 25 points and Calvin placed second (29 points).

The men's 4K winner was Grand Valley State's Nate Peck, who ran a time of 11:40.1 in the 167-runner field.

Sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) was FSU's highest finisher as he came in 30th (12:37.4). Junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) finished 36th (12:43.0), sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) took 60th place (13:09.3) and sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) recorded a 67th-place finish (13:15.3).

Senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) came in 70th (13:17.9), freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) was 71st (13:18.6) and freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) finished 73rd (13:20.2).

Senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) placed 78th (13:23.1), freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick, Mich./Gaylord) took 95th place (13:45.1) and sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) finished 96th (13:46.3).

Junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) finished 97th (13:46.9), freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) came in 101st (13:49.5) and senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) placed 118th (14:05.8).

Kelsh took 26th place in the collegiate division, not including the Division I runners.

The Bulldogs will next take part in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships Saturday, Oct. 21, starting at 10 a.m. (EDT) in Findlay, Ohio.

Sept. 30: Ferris Women Seventh, Men Eighth At Loyola Lakefront Invitational

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams both took part in the 34th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 30) on Montrose Avenue Beach in Chicago, Ill. The event included 10 races and over 4,000 runners.

The Bulldog women finished seventh overall of 33 teams in the women's collegiate maroon division with 238 points. Case Western Reserve (Ohio) claimed the divisional title with 89 points while Nebraska Wesleyan earned runner-up kudos with 101 points.

Saginaw Valley State's Becca Rudey won the race's individual championship as she was timed in 17:56 on the 5K course. The field included 379 participants.

Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) paced the Bulldogs with an eighth-place (18:49) showing. Senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) took 29th place (19:21), senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) was 51st overall (19:46) and freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) finished 64th (19:55) in the field.

Sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) was 97th (20:21), junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) finished 125th (20:51) and sophomore Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) placed 147th (21:07) overall.

Freshman Tracy Fry (Mecosta/Chippewa Hills) was 197th (21:49) for the Bulldog women.

In the men's division, Ferris was eighth overall with 261 points among the 27 teams competing in the maroon division. Nebraska Wesleyan emerged as the men's champion with 47 points while Case Western Reserve placed second (88 points).

Sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) was FSU's highest finisher as he came in 19th (26:24) overall in the 8K race. The individual winner was Jon Hodge, who competed unattached and was timed in 25:04. The field included 330 runners.

Sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) took 56th place (27:13), junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) finished 65th (27:22) and senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) came in 67th (27:23).

Senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) placed 100th (28:01), freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) was 109th (28:09) and sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) finished 115th (28:14).

Sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) recorded a 135th-place finish (28:35), freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) finished 162nd (29:08) and freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick, Mich./Gaylord) took 167th place (29:11).

Junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) finished 178th (29:25), freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) came in 189th (29:33) and senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) placed 190th (29:35).

Ferris State returns home to host the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships Friday, Oct. 6, at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The first of five races will begin at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).

Sept. 22: Ferris Teams Earn Runner-Up Honors In Annual Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams hosted the 32nd annual running of the Bulldog Invitational Friday (Sept. 22) at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldog women earned runner-up honors in the 10-team field with 38 total points. Grand Valley State claimed the team title with 31 points while Saginaw Valley State took third place with 56 points.

The individual winner was Kristen Balla, who completed the 5K course in a time of 18:54 while running unattached. The women's field included 86 participants.

Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) led the Bulldogs as she placed fourth overall (19:02). Senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) came in eighth (19:17), sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) was 11th (19:23) and freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) took 12th place (19:24).

Senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) recorded a 15th-place finish (19:39), junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) finished 18th (19:58) and sophomore Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) placed 33rd (20:41) overall.

FSU freshman Tracy Fry (Mecosta/Chippewa Hills) came in 34th (20:41) to round out the Bulldog women's lineup.

In the men's division, Ferris also received runner-up kudos with 63 points. Lansing Community College won the team title with 54 points and Saginaw Valley State placed third overall (65 points) of nine competing teams.

Junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) led FSU with a sixth-place effort (26:44) on the 8K course. Nick Polk of Grand Valley State was the individual winner in the 108-runner field as he clocked 25:25 overall.

Sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) finished ninth (26:49) for FSU, sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) took 19th place (27:19) and senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) placed 21st (27:20).

Ferris freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) came in 22nd (27:26), senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) was 35th (28:03) and freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) finished 36th (28:04).

Sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) recorded a 39th-place finish (28:06), junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) finished 44th (28:16), freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick, Mich./Gaylord) took 50th place (28:40) and sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) was 51st (28:41).

Freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) finished 56th (28:55) in the field and senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) placed 72nd (30:16).

The Bulldogs will next take part in the annual Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday, Sept. 30, starting at 10 a.m. (EDT) in Chicago, Ill.

Sept. 15: Ferris Teams Take Seventh Place At Michigan State Invitational

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country squads took part in the Michigan State Nike/Playmakers Spartan Invitational held Friday (Sept. 15) in East Lansing, Mich.

The Bulldog women's squad placed seventh of nine competing teams in the annual event while the men's team finished seventh among 11 squads in their field.

Michigan State took the women's team title with 19 points, Western Michigan was second with 74 points and Oakland placed third (92). Ferris totaled 179 points.

Senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) led the way for the women's squad as she placed 28th overall (24:33) on the 6K course held at Forest Akers East Golf Course. MSU took four of the top five individual spots with Alissa McKaig claiming the overall title in a time of 21:39.

Senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) placed 31st (24:47) in the 97-runnner women's field. Sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) came in 35th (25:04), sophomore Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) took 45th place (25:39) and sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) finished 48th (25:43) for Ferris State.

Junior Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) was 49th (25:48) and freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads Charter) came in 53rd (25:53). Sophomore Ashley Lehmann (Grand Rapids/Grandville) placed 55th (25:57), freshman Tracy Fry (Mecosta/Chippewa Hills) finished 78th (27:29) and freshman Rebecca Bell (Eaton Rapids) took 93rd place (30:02) to round out the Bulldog lineup.

In the men's competition, Ferris finished with 206 points. Michigan took top honors in the men's race with 24 points, MSU was second (33) and Edinboro (Pa.) finished third with 105 points.

Michigan State's Stephan Shay won the men's 8K race by finishing in a time of 24:58.

Ferris was led by junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport), who finished 36th overall (27:46). Senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) was the next Bulldog finisher as he came in 42nd overall (28:01) of the 112 runners competing in the men's division.

Sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) placed 49th (28:20), freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) finished 62nd (28:50), senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) was 70th (29:29) and sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) took 71st place (29:30) for FSU.

Freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick/Gaylord) registered a 75th place showing (29:40), junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) was 79th overall (29:50) and freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) took 88th (30:13). Freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) also competed and was 90th (30:20) in the field, senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) finished 94th (30:46) while sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) came in 101st (31:47).

Ferris State will host its annual Bulldog Invitational Friday, Sept. 22, starting at 4 p.m. (EDT) on FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Sept. 1: Ferris State Opens 2006 Campaign At CMU Jeff Drenth Memorial Invite

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country squads officially opened the 2006 campaign Friday (Sept. 1) afternoon by taking part in the Jeff Drenth Memorial Invitational hosted by Central Michigan University at CMU's University Park in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

The non-scoring event featured runners from CMU, Michigan State, Ferris and unattached student-athletes.

Sophomore Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) guided the Bulldog men's squad as he placed 12th overall in the 49-runner field with a time of 15:10.6 on the 5-kilometer (K) course. The men's race was won by CMU's Matt Loiselle, who clocked 14:34.0 in the event.

Junior Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) took 31st place (16:05) for FSU, senior Corey Reinke (Big Rapids) came in 34th (16:19) and freshman Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) placed 36th (16:31).

Freshman Bill Stroo (Lowell/Grand Rapids Christian) finished 37th (16:33), sophomore Dan Volk (Rockford) was 38th (16:34) and sophomore Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) recorded a 42nd-place effort (16:54).

Senior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) placed 43rd (16:56), sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) was 44th (17:05.1), freshman Brian Counsil (Frederick/Gaylord) took 46th place (17:10.2), freshman Brian Reynolds (Kalamazoo/Otsego) came in 47th (17:11), senior Dan DeLeeuw (Midland/Dow) finished 48th (17:40) and junior Nate Penny (Zeeland) registered a 49th-place showing (17:53) as 13 different FSU runners competed in the men's competition.

The Bulldog women's squad had nine student-athletes take part in the 5K event. Sophomore Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) was Ferris' top finisher as she placed 13th overall (18:38). MSU's Alissa McKaig claimed the women's title with a time of 17:10 in the 42-runner field.

Senior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) was 15th (18:49), senior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) finished 20th (19:05.5), sophomore Ashley Lehmann (Grand Rapids/Grandville) placed 26th (19:24) and sophomore Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) was 27th (19:25).

Junior Jacquelyn Green (Portage/Northern) captured 33rd place (20:12), sophomore Leticia Carvalho-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) wound up 36th (20:18), freshman Rebecca Monroe (Big Rapids/Crossroads) was 38th (20:25) and junior Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) rounded out the lineup with a 40th-place performance (20:38).

Ferris State returns to action by taking part in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational Friday, Sept. 15, in East Lansing, Mich. The event is tentatively slated to start at 4 p.m. (EDT).
