FERRIS STATE ADDS PREP VOLLEYBALL RECRUIT KARLA WHITE

Anchor Bay High School Product Joins Bulldog Volleyball Program

The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has signed Karla White (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2003-04 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ seventh-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

A 6-0 middle hitter, White earned 2002-03 Detroit News Second-Team All-Metro accolades and presently holds eight blocking records at Anchor Bay High School. She tallied 323 kills and 97 total blocks while leading the Tars to a 36-12-2 finish as a junior in 2001-02. A team captain, White was both a three-time (2001-03) Macomb Area Conference All-Academic Team selection and an all-county pick under head coach Terri Szur.

“Karla is an extremely hard-working athlete who is willing to put in the extra time and effort to reach her goals,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “Her fundamental skills base is strong and I expect her to make an impact in the Ferris State volleyball program.”

A two-time (2002-03) all-conference pick, White registered 73 kills and 92 total blocks in 103 games during the 2000-01 campaign as Anchor Bay claimed the conference championship. The 2002-03 team Most Valuable Player Award winner guided the Tars to second-place finishes at both the Andover High School and University of Michigan Tournaments in her final season.

“Her work ethic and attitude are great,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “Karla is a quick and strong athlete who’s focused on making her presence known.”

White also participated in basketball at Anchor Bay and attained both team Most Valuable Player Award honors and first-team all-conference recognition as a senior. She has played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the USA Michigan and Bluewater Elite Volleyball teams.

The daughter of Randy and Karen White, Karla plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State. She joins fall signees Keagan Krauss (Lake Odessa/Lakewood) and Molly Pickvet (Pinconning) as members of Ferris State’s 2003 recruiting class.

FSU concluded the 2002 campaign with a 24-7 overall mark, which represented the program's fifth consecutive 20-win campaign and included a second-place 15-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division mark. Ferris also earned its 11th NCAA Division II Tournament bid in the program’s history while making its fifth-straight league tournament appearance in 2002.
