FERRIS STATE ADDS PREP VOLLEYBALL RECRUIT CANDICE MARUT

Pinconning High School Product Becomes Latest FSU Signee

Eighth-year Ferris State University women’s volleyball head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm has announced the addition of Candice Marut (Pinconning), who has committed to attend FSU and play volleyball beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.

A 5-10 outside hitter, Marut was both a second-team All-Northeastern Michigan Conference (NMC) honoree and honorable mention all-state selection for Pinconning High School during the 2002-03 campaign. She joins current FSU freshman middle hitter Molly Pickvet (Pinconning) as former Spartan players in the Bulldog program. FSU VolleyballBrandel-Wilhelm expects Marut to compete at both the setter and outside hitter positions at Ferris State.

“Candice is a versatile athlete who works hard in developing her skills,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “We’re excited to have Candice join our program and are expecting big things from her in the future.”

A 2002-03 first team all-region pick, Marut guided PHS to its third consecutive conference championship while serving as a team co-captain in 2002-03. The 2001-02 All-NMC Second-Teamer earned team Most Improved Player Award accolades as a sophomore after helping the Spartans claim both the district and regional championships for the second-straight campaign under head coach Marion LaFave.

“Based on her high school performance, Candice has the ability to be extremely productive in our program,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She has significant experience and the skills necessary to become a solid collegiate player.”

Marut played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the Valley Volleyball Club under head coach Nikola Petrovic. She also garnered four varsity basketball letters and competed in softball.

Besides athletics, Marut has served as a class officer and been active in the National Honor Society. She also took part in Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) and was named PHS’ 2003 homecoming queen.

Marut, who plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State, is the daughter of Andrew and Carla Marut. She joins Andrea Zylstra (Muskegon/Mona Shores) and Jessica Dezelski (Lake Ann/Traverse City West) as the Bulldogs’ 2004 volleyball recruits to date.

Ferris State compiled the program's sixth consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches this season, return all 12 current squad members for the 2004 campaign.
