Anchor Bay High School Product Becomes FSU’s Latest Signee

Andrea Rich Ninth-year Ferris State University women’s volleyball head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm has announced the addition of Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay), who has committed to attend FSU and play volleyball beginning with the 2005-06 academic year.

A 5-10 setter, Rich earned honorable mention all-state honors for Anchor Bay High School as a junior during the 2003-04 campaign after compiling 563 assists and 72 blocks. The team captain has earned Macomb Area Conference All-Academic Team recognition three times to date under head coach Terri Szur. She will join former prep teammate and cousin Karla White (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay), who recently completed her sophomore campaign at FSU, as members of the Bulldog program.

“We expect Andrea to fit easily into our system,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She’s extremely competitive and is a dynamic athlete who could compete for playing time as a freshman.”

A two-time (2003-04) all-conference pick, Rich netted team Most Valuable Player Award honors for the second consecutive campaign in 2003-04 and was chosen as an All-Macomb County Second Team selection. She has received the squad’s Athletic Achievement and Rookie-of-the-Year Awards during her prep career.

Rich has also participated in basketball and softball at Anchor Bay while attaining team Most Valuable Player Award honors in both sports. In addition, she has played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the USA Michigan team coached by Dave Schmidlin.

The daughter of David and Anita Rich, Andrea is undecided on a major at Ferris State. She joins twin sisters Katie and Jacque Edwards (Cedar Springs) as members of Ferris State’s 2005 recruiting class.

Ferris State concluded the 2004 campaign with a 25-7 overall record, including a second place 14-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division mark. FSU, which claimed its ninth GLIAC Championship this season by virtue of its league tournament title, also advanced to the NCAA-II National Tournament for the 12th time in school history.
