The Ferris State University women's volleyball team, which has won five consecutive matches to date this campaign, is ranked tied for 25th place in this week's (Oct. 26) CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll which was announced today (Oct. 26) by the AVCA.
The Bulldogs registered 48 total points in this week's balloting process and are tied with Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) for the final poll position after previously being listed among other teams receiving votes with five points last week (Oct. 19). The ranking marks the first time the Bulldogs have been nationally-ranked since spending seven weeks in the national poll during the 2002 campaign. FSU's most recent ranking was 24th in the Nov. 19, 2002, poll.
In addition to Ferris State, three other Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools are featured in this week's poll. They include 11th-ranked Grand Valley State, Northern Michigan (16th) and Northwood (18th). Findlay, which was ranked 22nd last week, dropped to the list of other teams garnering votes with 36 points.
Nebraska-Kearney held the top spot in this week's poll for the eighth consecutive week as the Lopers tallied 32 of a possible 35 first-place votes and 872 total points. California-San Diego was second (833) and Truman State (Mo.) ranked third with 812 points.
The Bulldogs, who are presently 18-5 overall and 10-3 in league play, upset then ninth-ranked archrival Grand Valley State 3-1 in their most recent action last Thursday (Oct. 21) at Allendale, Mich. Ferris ranks third to date in the most recent (Oct. 20) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings behind GVSU and Northwood.
Ferris' victory over GVSU, which was FSU’s first in Allendale since Sept. 3, 1994, ended a four-match series' losing streak to the Lakers. Grand Valley State had won 12 straight series’ meetings at home against the Bulldogs entering the match. GVSU also had its 16-match winning streak this season snapped with the loss.
Ferris State will visit Saginaw Valley State this Friday, Oct. 29, for a 7 p.m. (EDT) conference encounter at University Center, Mich. FSU will then battle Northwood Saturday, Oct. 30, in a 4 p.m. (EDT) league tilt at Midland, Mich.
