PREP MIDDLE HITTER BECOMES LATEST FERRIS VOLLEYBALL RECRUIT

East Kentwood High School’s Emily Nemmers Announces Intentions To Join Bulldogs

The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has received a commitment from prep middle hitter Emily Nemmers (Caledonia/East Kentwood), who has announced her intentions to attend and compete in volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2004-05 academic term. The announcement was made by eighth-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

Emily Nemmers The 6-0 Nemmers notched 408 kills, 276 digs, 178 total blocks and 66 service aces as a senior at East Kentwood High School during the 2003-04 campaign. The two-time (2002-03 & 2003-04) team captain attained first-team All-Ottawa Kent Red Conference and third-team Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) all-state accolades under head coach Roxanne Steenhuysen as the Falcons registered a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Class A State Runner-Up finish and a 77-6 overall record in 2003-04.

“Emily is a spirited competitor and we’re excited to have her join our program,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “She knows how to work hard and how to win, which will make her a tremendous asset to our program.”

Nemmers concluded her four-year varsity career with 1,912 kills, 492 digs, 480 total blocks and 91 aces in 560 games played. Both a first-team 2003-04 all-region and all-area honoree, Nemmers also garnered individual academic all-state laurels in her final campaign. The 2003-04 team Captain’s Award recipient led EKHS to its fourth consecutive district championship along with regional and conference titles this season.

In addition to volleyball, Nemmers was a three-year basketball letterwinner. She received honorable mention all-conference and all-area kudos as a senior (2003) while serving as team captain for the second straight campaign. Nemmers played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the F.A.R. Out Volleyball Team, which was coached by Maya Eveland.

The daughter of Greg and Annette Nemmers, Emily was active in the National Honor Society and served as a youth volunteer. She plans to major in pharmacy at Ferris State and joins Andrea Zylstra (Muskegon/Mona Shores), Jessica Dezelski (Lake Ann/Traverse City West), Candice Marut (Pinconning), Lindsay Johnson (Cadillac) and Ashley Ollenburger (Charlotte) as the Bulldogs’ 2004 recruits to date.

Ferris State compiled the program's sixth consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches last season, return all 12 of their 2003 squad members for the 2004 campaign.
