CADILLAC’S LINDSAY JOHNSON JOINS FERRIS VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM

Prep Middle Hitter Is Latest Addition To Bulldog’s 2004 Squad

Lindsay Johnson Eighth-year Ferris State University women’s volleyball head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm has announced the addition of prep middle hitter Lindsay Johnson (Cadillac), who has committed to attend and play volleyball at FSU beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.

The 5-10 Johnson posted 508 kills, 501 digs and 44 solo blocks while leading Cadillac High School to a 41-17-3 overall record as a senior during the 2003-04 campaign. The two-time (2002-03 & 2003-04) Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) All-Region honoree also attained honorable mention all-state accolades along with All-Big North Conference kudos for the second consecutive season. Her 501 digs this campaign broke the school’s single-season record.

“Lindsay is a fantastic athlete who’s speedy in her court movements,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “She’s a quick learner and I have no doubt she will make a strong impact in our program.”

Johnson, who served as CHS’ team captain in 2003-04, earned team Most Valuable Player Award laurels and Traverse City Record-Eagle Dream Team honors for the second straight season under head coach Michelle Brines. The 2003-04 All-Area Dream Team Captain compiled all-tournament team recognition at the Mt. Pleasant High School and Ferris State Invitational tournaments this year. She totaled 389 kills, 441 digs and 39 total blocks in her junior season (2002-03) after helping guide the Vikings to both a conference and district championship in the 2001-02 campaign.

“We’re excited Lindsay has decided to become a Bulldog,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She’ll compliment the rest of our recruiting class extremely well and has a bright future ahead.”

Besides volleyball, Johnson also competed in basketball and tallied second team all-league recognition, team Most Valuable Player Award honors and all-area kudos as a senior (2003) after previously earning honorable mention all-area laurels in 2002. She played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the Inside Out North 18 and Under Gold Team, which was coached by both Chris Allard and Tim Keenan.

In addition to athletics, Johnson has been active in the student council, yearbook and junior rotarian organizations. The daughter of Bruce and Deb Johnson, Lindsay plans to major in business/public relations at Ferris State. She joins Andrea Zylstra (Muskegon/Mona Shores), Jessica Dezelski (Lake Ann/Traverse City West), Candice Marut (Pinconning) and Ashley Ollenburger (Charlotte) as the Bulldogs’ 2004 recruits to date.

Ferris State compiled the program's sixth consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches last season, return all 12 of their 2003 squad members for the 2004 campaign.
