The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has signed twin sisters Katie and Jacque Edwards (Cedar Springs) to national letters-of-intent to attend and play volleyball at FSU, starting with the fall 2005 season. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ ninth-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
“It will be a great experience to have two athletic players like Katie and Jacque in our program,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “Both of the sisters have outstanding ability and I’m certain they’ll work hard to realize their potential.”
The duo, which is presently beginning their senior campaigns at Cedar Springs High School, led the Red Hawks to four tournament championships during the 2003-04 season under head coach Jill MacLaren. A 5-11 outside hitter, Katie earned 2003-04 All-Ottawa Kent White Conference (OK White) recognition and attained league sportsmanship award accolades after totaling 235 kills and 30 blocks last season. Jacque, who’s a 6-0 middle hitter, posted 89 kills and 65 blocks during her junior campaign.
“Katie’s a quick athlete and we’re excited to have her join our team,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “Jacque’s a multi-sport athlete who we expect will develop well within our system.”
In addition to volleyball, both sisters have also participated in basketball along with track and field at CSHS while twice attaining all-league kudos in track and field. They both were members of the Red Hawks’ state-qualifying 4x800-meter relay team the last two seasons and also played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the Carpe Diem Volleyball Team under head coach Shawn Wirt.
“Both Katie and Jacque are dynamic and explosive athletes,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “Katie has tremendous potential as a player while Jacque has been involved in several sports and never focused entirely on volleyball.”
Besides athletics, they were also involved in the local girl scouts and student venture programs.
The daughters of Jaimee and Sue Edwards, they represent the Bulldogs’ initial 2005 signees to date. Katie plans to major in television production at Ferris State while Jacque is a visual design and web media major.
Ferris State concluded the 2004 campaign with a 25-7 overall record, including a second place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark. FSU, which won its first-ever GLIAC Tournament title this season, also advanced to the NCAA-II National Tournament for the 12th time in school history. Eighteen of the Bulldogs’ 20 squad members from the 2004 campaign are eligible to return next season.
