The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has built an unmatched tradition since moving into the Ewigleben Sports Arena in 1981. In an effort to uphold FSU’s rich history, plans were recently announced to renovate and upgrade the program’s existing locker room facility.

The project will include the addition of 20 custom-built wood lockers, a study lounge and video room for daily utilization when completed. Renovation plans also entail the installation of storage cabinets and new flooring to enhance the facility’s interior appearance. The “Bulldog Rally” campaign, which is presently underway, will fund a significant portion of the project. The campaign’s goal is to raise at least $30,000 through private donations, which will be earmarked towards the renovation.

“It’s time to bring our locker room up to the standards the program has attained throughout its history,” said FSU Assistant Athletics Director Brian Kegler. “This area has been neglected for several years and we have an opportunity to make significant improvements. These kinds of projects are vital for the program to continue to reach new heights.”

The renovation, which will be completed this summer, will enhance Ferris’ ability to attract high quality student-athletes and provide current team members with the resources necessary to compete at the NCAA Division II level. Contributions are presently being accepted from all alumni, supporters and friends of the program as well as anyone else interested in donating to the project.

The “Bulldog Rally” campaign is soliciting private financial support to provide for the construction and installation of the custom-built lockers. Prospective donors can become a lifetime sponsor of a locker by pledging $1,000 over a one-to-four year period. In return, a lasting statement of the donors’ commitment to the program will be made with an engraved plaque at the top of the locker. Michigan residents may claim a 50 percent credit on their state tax return to a maximum of $200 for individuals and $400 for couples through gifts to the project.

The Bulldogs’ impressive records of achievement in the Ewigleben Sports Arena include a 217-57 (.792) overall mark and six undefeated home seasons (1984, ‘87, ‘89, ‘90, ‘96 and ‘02). Ferris led the nation in NCAA-II volleyball attendance in 1989 while ranking seventh nationally in 1990 and 15th in 1997. In addition, the Bulldogs have claimed eight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championships and made 11 NCAA-II National Tournament appearances in the last 23 seasons.

FSU compiled the program's sixth consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches last season, return all 12 of their 2003 squad members for the 2004 campaign.
