FSU To Face Gannon In League Tournament

November 10, 2002

30 years The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will face Gannon this Thursday (Nov. 14) in the first quarterfinal match of the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at the Grand Valley State Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich. The match will start at 12 p.m. (EST).

FSU, which will be making its fifth consecutive conference tournament appearance, previously claimed runner-up honors in 1998, 1999 and 2001. Last season, the Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Championship match (11/10/01) for the third time in the last four years and dropped a 3-0 decision versus Northwood at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich.

Ferris is the North Division's second seed while Gannon claimed the GLIAC South Division's third overall seed. FSU defeated the Knights by a score of 3-1 (30-20, 20-30, 30-25, 32-30) earlier this season (10/11/02) at GU's Hammermill Center in Erie, Pa.

The other quarterfinal round matches include Findlay (#1 seed South) versus Northern Michigan (#4 seed North), Mercyhurst (#2 seed South) against Northwood (#3 seed North) and tournament host Grand Valley State (#1 seed North) taking on Michigan Tech (#4 seed South). Ferris, which finished in a tie for second place in the North Division with Northwood, received the second-seed over the Timberwolves by virtue of its season split with divisional champion Grand Valley State. Northwood dropped both of its regular-season matches to the Lakers.

The tournament semifinal matches are slated for this Friday (Nov. 15) with the title match to be held this Saturday (Nov. 16). The winner of Saturday's championship match receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, which will be held Nov. 21-23 at a campus site to be determined.

Ferris State, which is ranked 22nd overall in the latest (Nov. 5) American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national poll and second in the current (Nov. 6) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings, completed the regular season with a 24-5 overall mark, including a second-place 15-3 GLIAC North Division record. Gannon is 14-10 overall entering the tournament and was 10-7 in league action.
