May 20, 2002

Prep volleyball standout Lauren Heine (Ypsilanti) (pronounced Hine) has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s volleyball at Ferris State University, beginning with the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by sixth-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel.

A 6-1 middle hitter, Heine totaled 351 kills, 289 digs and 151 total blocks in leading Ypsilanti High School to a 32-12-3 overall record as a senior during the 2001-02 campaign. The two-time (2001-02) All-Michigan Mega Red Conference selection received honorable mention 2001-02 Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) Class A All-State accolades and led the Braves to the 2002 Ypsilanti Classic Tournament Championship.

“Lauren is a strong athlete with huge potential,” Brandel said. “With a strong work ethic, she should be able to adapt well to the faster pace of collegiate volleyball.

“She has a competitive personality on the court and I expect her to add a great deal to our program,” added Brandel.

Heine, a two-time (2001-02) second-team Detroit News All-Metro Volleyball pick, registered 320 kills, 271 digs and 157 total blocks during her junior campaign as the Braves compiled a 23-13-6 overall mark. Prepped by Phil Lozen, Heine twice served as Ypsilanti’s team captain and was a two-time (2001-02) all-region honoree. The four-time (1999-2002) team Most Valuable Player Award winner also played club volleyball for the Motor City (1999), USA Michigan (2000-01) and Go Blue (2002) programs.

In addition to volleyball, Heine was active in the school’s yearbook staff, symphonic band and the homecoming float committee. The daughter of Nancy and the late George Heine, Lauren remains undecided on a major at Ferris State.

Heine joins Emily Clouse (Tiffin, Ohio/Bascom Hopewell-Loudon), Brittny Godlewski (St. Clair Township/Marysville) and Adrienne Jager (Kalamazoo/Comstock) as 2002 Ferris State volleyball recruits.

FSU finished the 2001 campaign with a 21-11 overall mark, which represented the 15th 20-win season in the 29-year history of the Ferris State volleyball program. The Bulldogs earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament runner-up honors for the third time in the last four seasons and registered a second-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division finish. Ferris will open the 2002 campaign Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) Invitational in Wheeling, W.Va.
