BULLDOG DUO EARNS ALL-REGION HONORS
Erin Minnis, Alaina Olds Garner All-Great Lakes Region Recognition
Nov. 21, 2001
For the third time in the six-year tenure of Ferris State University women's volleyball coach Tia Brandel, two Bulldog players have earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II All-Great Lakes Region honors.
Senior Erin Minnis and junior Alaina Olds have been named to the 12-member 2001 All-Great Lakes Region squad. Minnis and Olds led Ferris State to a 21-11 mark this past season and a runner-up 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament finish.
GLIAC champion Grand Valley State University had three all-region selections. Ferris State and the University of Findlay each had two players picked while five other schools had one all-region honoree.
A 2000 All-Great Lakes Region selection, Minnis was one of five seniors to earn all-region recognition and among four repeat selections. A 6-0 middle hitter, Minnis tallied 372 kills, 273 digs and 138 total blocks during the 2001 campaign. She became the 11th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark versus Michigan Tech University (Oct. 19) and finished her career with 1,084 kills.
One of six juniors named to the all-region team, Olds led FSU in kills (405) and total blocks (148) this past season. She earned GLIAC North Division Player of the Week honors twice (Oct. 6 and Oct. 22) and registered two triple-double (kills, digs and blocks) performances this year.
Besides earning all-region accolades, both Minnis and Olds were named to the 2001 All-GLIAC squad and were 2001 GLIAC All-Tournament Team selections. By attaining all-region honors, both players are now eligible for AVCA Division II All-America consideration.
Ferris State finished the 2001 campaign with a 21-11 overall mark. The Bulldogs posted their fourth-straight 20-win season and reached the GLIAC Tournament Championship match for the third time in the past four years.
