FSU Inks Ohio High School Setter to National Letter-of-Intent
Dec. 12, 2001
Prep volleyball standout Emily Clouse (Tiffin, Ohio/Bascom Hopewell-Loudon) has committed to attend and play women's volleyball at Ferris State University, beginning with the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by sixth-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel.
"Emily will be a tremendous addition to our program and the university," Brandel said. "She is a strong competitor and knows what it takes to be a champion."
A 5-9 setter, Clouse led Bascom Hopewell-Loudon High School to its fourth-consecutive Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division IV State Championship during the fall 2001 campaign. Clouse recorded 43 set assists in the Chieftains' 2-1 title match victory against Centerburg (Nov. 10) at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.
A first-team 2001 All-OHSAA Division IV pick, Clouse registered 802 assists, 109 digs and 41 kills while leading the Chieftains to a 28-1 overall mark this past season. A two-time first-team all-district honoree, Clouse compiled a team-high 732 assists and recorded 98 digs while garnering first-team 2000 All-OHSAA Division IV honors as a junior.
"Emily has significant experience at the setter position," Brandel said. "Her game experience and knowledge of the sport will give us added strength at the setter spot."
A four-year letterwinner, Clouse received 1999 All-OHSAA Division IV Honorable Mention kudos and was a two-time (2000, 2001) All-Midland Athletic League selection. Prepped by Dave Rienhart, Clouse earned team Most Valuable Player honors three-straight seasons and served as Bascom Hopewell-Loudon's 2001 team co-captain. Clouse, a four-time (1998-01) Academic All-OHSAA Division IV honoree, also played for the Black Swamp Volleyball Club, which advanced to the national tournament four times.
Besides being a standout athlete, Clouse served as junior class vice-president (2000-01) and is presently the school's senior class secretary. A three-year member of the National Honor Society, Clouse remains undecided on a major at Ferris State.
The daughter of Clint and Chris Clouse, Emily is the younger sister of Miami (Ohio) University women's volleyball player Summer Clouse, who was the starting setter at the NCAA Division I school as a senior during the 2001 campaign.
Ferris State finished the 2001 campaign with a 21-11 overall mark, which represented the 15th 20-win season in the 29-year history of the Ferris State volleyball program. The Bulldogs earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament runner-up honors for the third time in the past four seasons and registered a second-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division finish.
