For only the second time this 2008 season, the Ferris State women's volleyball team suffered defeat as the Bulldogs lost a 3-1 non-conference decision (25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18) to Minnesota State this Saturday (Sept. 6) at the Tampa Classic in Tampa, Fla.
The loss snapped Ferris State's three-match winning streak as the Bulldogs are now 6-2 on the season to date. Minnesota State, which was among teams receiving votes in this week's CBS College Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II poll, improved to 3-4 overall.
Junior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) was the Bulldogs' leader in kills with 10 total while junior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) totaled nine kills and sophomore middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) contributed eight kills. MSU's Ashley Nachreiner's 22 kills represented a match high as the Mavericks held a .205 to .000 attack advantage and also won the battle at the net 14-8.
Senior setters Candice Marut (Pinconning) and Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) both dished out 13 assists apiece. Redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) dug a match-high tying 11 attacks while a pair of freshmen outside hitters, Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) and Karen Thompson (Holt), both recorded eight digs each.
