FERRIS EXTENDS WINNING STREAK WITH IMPRESSIVE HOME VICTORY
The Ferris State volleyball team celebrated "Volley For The Cure" in impressive style as the Bulldogs handed Hillsdale a 3-1 loss (25-17, 25-22, 19-15, 25-16) Friday (Oct. 3) evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest before a capacity crowd at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris State (10-7; 4-4 GLIAC) started out strong as the Bulldogs hit for .192 and .297, respectively, in the first two sets. Following a third-set loss, FSU regained its momentum as the Bulldogs turned in a match-best .455 attack percentage in the fourth set while holding the Chargers to only -.080 hitting efficiency.
FSU held a significant advantage in kills (50-35) while also posting greater numbers in service aces (11-5), digs (43-32), and total team blocks (8.0-4.0).
Junior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) continued to produce for the Bulldogs with a match-leading 12 kills on .526 hitting. Junior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) chipped in with 11 kills on .280 attacking and recorded a match-best tying four blocks assists. Junior middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) contributed seven kills to go with a .357 hitting percentage while also chalking up four block assists.
Senior setter-outside hitter Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) totaled 22 assists with four aces, nine digs, and four block assists. Senior setter-outside hitter Candice Marut (Pinconning) returned to the court after missing the last two weeks due to injury and responded with 18 assists and a .400 attack percentage.
The Bulldogs, who donned pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, performed well from a defensive standpoint as the hosts held Hillsdale to a .099 attack percentage. Individually, sophomore defensive specialist Dana Ruttle's (Reed City) 11 digs led all players and redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) notched double digits with 10 total.
