VOLLEYBALL SUFFERS SWEEP AT EIGHTH-RANKED GRAND VALLEY STATE

The Ferris State women's volleyball team slowed, but couldn't top nationally eighth-ranked Grand Valley State as the Bulldogs were swept in three straight sets (25-19, 25-12, 25-23) Tuesday (Sept. 16) evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss drops Ferris State to 1-2 in the conference and 7-5 overall. Meanwhile Grand Valley State improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC while extending their current winning streak to seven.

Junior outside hitter Katie Edwards' (Cedar Springs) eight kills paced Ferris State, which also received seven kills and four block assists from sophomore middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central).

Senior setter-outside hitter Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) turned in a strong showing, dishing out 20 assists to go along with nine digs. Freshman outside hitter Karen Thompson (Holt) paced the Bulldogs defensively with a squad-best 11 digs. She was aided by redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) and freshman outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood), who both recorded seven digs apiece.

Ferris State concluded the match with seven total team blocks to Grand Valley State's eight total. The Lakers led 31-27 in kills, but trailed 43-to-37 in the digs statistical category.

The Bulldogs hit at a .162 clip for the match while the Warriors turned in a .171 attack percentage. FSU held a 65-to-50 advantage in kills and 74-to-66 in digs. Both teams racked up seven total team blocks apiece.
